To the family of Mona Bandeen,
I'd like to add my sympathies to you all on the passing of this singular woman. We had several occasions to cross paths, through her connection to Bishop's University. Her husband, Robert Bandeen, in addition to his role as Chancellor of our university, made a major donation that funded restoration of a century-old building into a showpiece recital hall for the Department of Music. The building was named after him in recognition of this generosity and continues to be the heart of the school of music. Mona added to this gift by donating, through the Blair Foundation, two superb Steinway pianos, which have attracted many well-known performers to Bandeen Hall over the years. It has been some time since Mona visited our campus, but we are reminded of her daily, since there are two fine portraits, one of Robert and one of Mona, gracing the lobby of Bandeen Hall. Everyone who passes through the Music Department sees them.
I'm not sure who commissioned her portrait (the Chancellors all get theirs done as they leave office) but my favorite memory of Mona is coming across her one afternoon, in the deserted lobby, trying to measure the portrait of Robert without a ruler. I provided one for her and she noted the dimensions of the work. Her portrait appeared beside his, some time later - noticeably smaller. It's an excellent likeness, and I feel it captures her great energy. (I don't know if you have a copy of this portrait - if not, the university should be able to provide one.)
The list of her personal accomplishments and her contributions to so many organizations and worthy causes across the country is truly amazing. We were a pretty small part of that life of service. From now on I'll be reminded of that larger life every time I catch her gaze in the lobby of Bandeen Hall.
Sincerely,
Jack Eby,
Chair, Department of Music, Bishop's University
