David was also a special presence in my life. On Parliament Hill and through his friendship with my Mother, the late Mary Kennedy, he greatly assisted my securing articles at his then-firm Lyons, Arbus in 1981. There he introduced me to Jim Coutts, to whose campaign in Toronto I was essentially seconded for a time, to my delight. Over the years we maintained contact, with David as chair of FMC and I as a senior lawyer with a federal crown corporation. No matter my location, Toronto or Vancouver, whenever he was nearby on firm business he made a point to call or, frequently, grab a bite and talk. I will always remember his kindness and warmth, his wealth of hilarious stories, and the occasional hymn. David’s example showed me how to put faith into practice, and for that I am the most grateful. My deepest sympathies to Heather and the family.

David and I were members of Toronto City Council in the 1970s. We had many political differences, and I was in my polarizing mode of politics which did not help our relationship. As I grew older I found ways not to be so harsh and David never held my past against me: he was always friendly and cheery and he treated me well. We spent a very pleasant time chatting four or five months ago at a funeral, and I again admired his good and humane approach to life. I regret I am unable to attend his celebration at the end of March. I extend my condolences to Heather and the family.

This was quite a shock!
Sharon has many fun memories growing up in the Smith clan. David was her 1st cousin, so she has 1st hand knowledge of David's hilarious antics. He was always fun to be around and full of stories. Always kind, generous and caring.
Dick and Sharon Gray
Sincere condolences to the family. We're spending a lot of time reminiscing and reliving the fond fun memories.

I wish to express heartfelt sympathy to David’s loved ones especially Heather and his children. David has been a constant presence in our lives since 1997 when he took my daughter, Lorna, under his wing as a summer law student at FMC in Toronto. He was her mentor, her pal and in some ways a father like presence helping to overcome the loss of her Dad when she was very young. David became my friend in the Senate and later he shared my class at Mount Allison when I taught Political Leadership in Canada there. Whether the subject was politics, law or life itself, David could be brilliantly serious or hilariously funny. And oh how he loved the old hymns! I cherish all these memories especially the last time together when David and Heather took me to the Marshlands Inn for dinner here in Sackville. Together they were a truly remarkable couple, dedicated to their country, to their friends and their family. We have been blessed by David’s life. May he sing with the angels forever!

To Heather and David's entire family, my sincerest sympathies on David's passing. David and I met when we were both executive assistants to a federal cabinet minister in Pierre Trudeau's first Cabinet in the 1960s, and we had a great friendship through the ensuing years of his political, ministerial and legal careers. His humour, his intelligence, his sharp instincts created a person worth knowing plus working and kibitzing with. A fine, fine person and great Canadian. My wife Arlene and I are wintering in Florida and were very saddened to learn of David's death from an obituary in the National Post this morning.
For many years, we had been fellow residents at 1166 Bay Street.
David was always warm and friendly and showed us many kindnesses over the years. We will certainly miss him very much, and extent our condolences to his family-he should have had many more years.

I met David in Parliament when he became a Senator. He had a special enthusiasm for life, politics, friends, and good causes. He also was a great story teller and conversationalist. I count him as a friend. We spent some good times together, and had a lot of laughs, and also enjoyed life and times after politics. I am going to miss him very much. He served Canada well, and was loved and respected by many from both inside and outside of politics. See you on the other side David ! Paul Forseth MP 1993-2006

Having served Canada with such energy and distinction, may he now rest in peace.

Our deepest sympathy to the family.
I have many wonderful memories of David at our Faught farm (Elmer & Laura ) when I was growing up. He would often be there with his mom Beulah when she came with the Bible College ensemble---and of course they stayed with us ---and sometimes Aunt Lottie would be there. We loved when he came.
May your memories be treasured.
Love Ralph & Colleen (Faught) Beamer. (Peterborough )

Dear Heather, Alex, Kate, Laura and family,
My husband and I would like to express our sincere sympathy for your loss. David was an extraordinary man. He had the rare gift of making everyone feel special each and every time one had the opportunity to be in his presence. My husband, I and our family were fortunate to know David and it was an honour to host him as our guest at our wedding ceremonies in both Canada and Romania in 2010. I am sharing a picture of David and me on July 29, 2010 from the Palace of the Parliament in Bucharest, Romania. His enthusiasm and passion for different cultures were boundless and we cannot be happier to have had the opportunity to introduce David to the Romanian culture. We will forever have fond memories of David and his larger than life presence during such an important event in our lives.
We know that there are many like us who are deeply mourning David's passing as his was a life of service, compassion, love and excellence. May he rest in peace.

We record our gratitude for the friendship that David offered us. It was his compulsive generosity to a stranger from Ireland, whom David had met on a train, that led to the profound change in both our lives from 2004. Of that change, David was wont to say, 'see it as the Lord's will'. He served that Lord through his gift of friendship, his caring attitude, and his affective faith.
We extend to Heather and her family our sympathy in their grievous loss, and with them share many memories of David's warm and spontaneous love.
