We first met Ruth and Bill Herridge as new lake owners on Crawford Pond, Maine. Bill walked down to our cottage to introduce himself and insisted on us going back to his place to meet Ruth. Ruth Herridge was a gracious, intelligent and beautiful woman and we thought of them as our "elderly" neighbors. As we got to know them both, we found them to be anything but "elderly", and Ruth's stories of the history of Crawford Pond and Union informed us lots of little-known facts about our new "summer" home. We are so thankful for the neighbor get-togethers when we would all gather around Ruth who could tell us about the "old days" in Union. On our second summer on the lake Ruth invited us for dinner on a beautiful summer evening on their deck. Ruth was a gracious hostess, even having a lovely glass bowl centerpiece with a floating lake lily that Bill had retrieved from the lake on his morning lake trip in the canoe. We had them to dinner one mid October evening, spending hours around the dinner table hearing stories. A week after that night we received in the mail a beautiful, handwritten note from Ruth thanking us for the dinner. Larry saved the note because it was "special" to us and in the end of the note Ruth wrote ". . . we shall look forward to seeing you at your cottage, 'Come Spring' "(referencing a famous historical novel about the early settlers of Union) I like to think that when we go back to the lake, "come spring", a part of Ruth Herridge will also be there, in the twinkling stars at night or in the quiet wail of the loon or the blossoming of the wild flowers down by the lake, on Crawford Pond. Ruth was a blessing to all of us who knew her and Bill and Ruth were the perfect example of "Husband and Wife".

The obituary for this lovely woman appears in today's edition of the Globe. We made her acquaintance over many months in 1991 when our son was a patient at HSC Toronto. She was a chaplain at the Ronald Macdonald House. She was endlessly persistent in seeking us out, and endlessly kind and encouraging, just what we needed. We never saw her again, but never forgot her.

Dear Bill, I was deeply saddened by the news of Ruth's passing. My heart and prayers are with you, Elizabeth, Margaret, and Catherine. My wife (deceased in 1998) and I knew Ruth when she first arrived on Whitehall Road in Toronto as a new bride and became instant friends with she and Bill. We shared many happy occasions over the years with your parents and watched the three daughters grow into the women that your mother loved so proudly. I regret that I am unable to personally celebrate Ruth's life on February 15 with you as I do not return from California until April. Doug Hall.

The Directors of the Albert County Historical Society extend sincere condolences to the family of Ruth Herridge at this sad time. We will always treasure special memories of Ruth enjoying her visits to Albert County, New Brunswick with her husband, Bill, to attend the RB Bennett Day events at the Albert County Museum...even on their anniversary! Ruth was a gracious lady whose warm smile and sincere friendliness made everyone in her presence feel welcome and at ease.
With caring thoughts and prayers. “A life well-lived is a lasting inspiration”
