I was deeply saddened hearing of David’s passing. David, his brother ,John, my sister, Nancy and I were great friends when we were children back in the summers of the 50’s. I have very fond and vivid memories of running around with them through the woods of Long Point beside the windy shores of Balsam Lake, of playing board games at the Abel cottage, swimming, and being carefree in that magical time of childhood. Over the years, almost every summer, David would reconnect with us, driving up to our cottage and having a cup of tea with us. There was something about David, in his face, in his laugh that would take me back to those carefree days of childhood. I think now it was, what might be called, a ‘soulful happiness’ that shone from him. I know David went through some tough times, and perhaps it was that strong happy soul which supported him through the difficulties.
Childhood friendships tend to fade away but, I hope, most of us can remember a few dear friends like David who seem to never change, who when you see them again, they bring back those carefree, wind blown memories of being a kid again. Happy.
Thank you, David.
