Obituary of Barbara Elizabeth Brooks
BROOKS, Barbara Elizabeth (nee Nevison)
Peacefully, in Toronto on Friday, November 22, 2019 in her 93rd year. Beloved wife of Harvie. Loving mother to Cathy, Wendy (Michael Walkington) and Heather. Very proud grandmother of Jamon Camisso (Jessica Wilson), Emerson Camisso, Beth Walkington, and proud great grandmother to James Camisso.
Barbara was born in Kirkfield, Ontario on May 18, 1927. She spent her childhood in Coboconk, Ontario, with her family, and most beloved dog Nifty. She moved with her family to Midland, Ontario, completing her high school education prior to moving to Toronto as a young woman in late 1940’s. During these years, Barbara met dear friends with whom she sustained and nurtured friendships with for the rest of her life. Also during this time, in 1955, Barbara bought the most beautiful property on Black Lake in Haliburton, Ontario. Nothing gave her more joy than to share that very special place with those she loved most.
In 1960, Barbara married Harvie, and together, they built a life in Leaside, welcoming three daughters, and providing a home that was filled with support, laughter, and music. It was a dream of hers to complete her post-secondary education. She fulfilled this dream in 1980, completing her Library Techniques program at Seneca College. With that education, she started a career where she shared her love of books and kids, working at Leaside High School library for many years.
Barbara lived her life as the most authentically kind, thoughtful, elegant woman, that was always, at every moment of her life, thinking of others and how she could help them. She connected with people through her marvelous sense of humour. Nothing brought her more joy than knowing she had brought a smile to another’s face. This gift stayed with her every day of her life. She will be deeply missed and never forgotten by her family, and by dear friends that she met in every chapter of her life.
The family wishes to thank the incredible support provided by a team of caregivers that became companions and friends to Barbara and her daughters over the last few years living at Meighan Manor.
The family will receive friends at the Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles – Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville) from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 28th. A service to celebrate her life will be held at Timothy Eaton Memorial Church, 230 St. Clair Ave. West, at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 29th.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mooreland Kids, the Alzheimers Society of Canada or the Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care.
