Doug was the only person in Canada, I believe, who started to study Quantum Mechanics and the related Mathematics AFTER RETIREMENT. Doug and I met almost every week for our study for years. One day in this June, he told me his health condition got worse and he expected his life would be no more than two years. However, he said he would like to keep our study as long as his mind can concentrate. Our last study meeting was on July 10th. In that meeting, he had to stop halfway to take some pills and then return to the desk. I received an email from Doug on July 24th inviting me to come to his home for studying math on July 31st (Wednesday). I went to his home on that day in the morning, but the room was dark, nobody answered the door. I called him, I could hear the phone ringing inside the house, but nobody picked it up. This had never happened, I had a terrible feeling that something happened much faster than expected. The bad news came at the end of the long weekend, less than a month since our last study.
In Canada, Doug Wood was the only person who would like to discuss math and physics issues with me as fun. The math book on my desk is still opened at the page left, but I have lost my friend Doug forever.

Dear Val,
We were profoundly saddened to hear of Doug's passing. We have so many lovely memories of time spent with you and Doug--chatting about books in the shop, lively dinners followed by entertaining games of bridge (and the wonderful time spent during 'bridge lessons' with you both and Babs). We will always remember Doug's kindness, his concern for others, his wonderful mind and passion for learning, and his irrepressible sense of humour. Please know that our thoughts are with you, Jen and the rest of Doug's family. Love Debbie and David

On the very first day I met Doug Woods, he taught my grade 5 class three cardinal points. First, how to recognize the Amanita mushroom (poisonous) and the way it would kill you. Second, that you would run faster with you toes pointed inward, than outward, and why. Third, that to begin a retort with an outright contradiction is ill-mannered, indicates arrogance and the unwillingness to learn from others, and is unlikly to advance one's position on the subject. He managed all this, with questions and answers, in about 40 minutes.
He spent very little of his working life at Upper Canada College ("the Prep") but his mark was clear, inspirational, unforgettable. A true gentleman to the quick, and an educator for aspiring teachers to emulate in every way.
I am so saddened to learn that he has left us so soon, My condolences to all his circle, on behalf of the many many young men who were inspired by their contact with him.

I am very sad to have received news of Doug's
passing. I remember him well...who could not!
Summers at Shanty Bay were idyllic...and Doug seemed to always be there ....on the court..at the lake or lounging on the veranda.....always with an open smile...a ready laugh..and a kind heart. i will carry the happy image of him with me always.
Much love to all the family....who....i also remember with great affection.

We were very sorry to hear of Doug’s death yesterday. We will remember with fondness our time with him and Val in Italy, as well as the entertaining conversations about music, computers and photography over the years. Doug was truly a Renaissance man, with boundless enthusiasm and a huge breadth of knowledge. He will be sorely missed.
