Dear Linda, I was so sorry to hear about Mladen's passing. It seems that no matter how prepared we think we are for such an event, it still comes as a shock. Having known him for years and working directly with him at one point, I know he was a gentle, caring, person with a great sense of humour.
My thoughts are with you and your family and I am so sorry I was unable to attend the service. God bless you all.

Dear Linda, Iva, Claire, and Anne,
I was very saddened to hear of Mladen's passing. Mladen holds a very dear place in my heart and I will always cherish the memories from my time in his lab. It was a very special time for me and I learned so much from him, not only about how to be a scientist, but also how to be a good mentor. Mladen was very kind, supportive, and caring, and always had his students' best interests in mind. I am indebted to him for what he has taught me and where I have been able to go in my life and career because of my time in his lab.
My deepest condolences to all of you.
Love,
Karen

Dear Linda,
Mladen was a remarkable scientist, a beloved mentor for generations of researchers here in Toronto and further afield, and a great academic citizen. Ilse and I also have fond memories of Mladen in his role as a father, coming to visit us on Glencairn Avenue to gather your daughter after play-dates with ours. We are very sorry for your loss, and extend our heartfelt condolences to you and your family.
In sympathy,
David Naylor

Dear Linda: I offer you my deep condolences on the passing of Mladen. He truly was a Canadian giant in diabetes research and education. But more than that, he was warm and considerate. As Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, I relied on him on many occasions for advice. He will be missed.

Condolences to the family on your loss. I am one of many people around the world who benefited greatly from Mladen's brilliant understanding of the complex ways by which the body regulates blood sugar levels. I remember many stimulating discussions with him about our various research projects, mostly mine and his, but happily for me some in which we collaborated together. He was always kind, generous, and supportive to me. And with the highest level of intellectual honesty. I'll certainly miss him.

Dear Linda, Iva, Claire and Anne and your families;
We offer you our heartfelt condolences on Mladen's passing.
I was one of the large number of people he took under his wing, upon my arrival in 1972 two floors above his lab in the Medical Sciences Building. This led to a collaboration from which our last study was published in 2015! I'd like to think that we became mutual mentors, who generated results with important clinical applications in obesity and diabetes. In 1974 his intuition led me in a direction resulting in the discovery of the first animal spontaneous type 1 diabetes syndrome closely resembling that in humans. Our interactions went far beyond our labs and the then TGH Clinical Investigation Unit, becoming an enduring friendship. The Canadian and international diabetes research community has lost one of its memorable contributors.
May you be spared further sorrow.
Errol
