I am an old Havergalian residing in the UK and am saddened to hear this news.
Ms. De Freitas was the most wonderful and compassionate Spanish teacher.
Spanish with Miss DeFreitas stood out as one of the highlights of any academic year. Her classes were fun and educational. She never judged. From what I recall, she never lost her temper and yet managed to keep everyone's attention, no matter how naughty we all must have been.
She was warm, slightly stern with strong maternal instincts and an incredibly warm smile.
I also took her sewing classes and was rather hopeless (I think I was the only one in the class who failed the course). Never once was I judged or made to feel bad about my lack of skill with anything to do with fabric, needle and thread.
I was so lucky to have her as a teacher.
