Obituary of Juanita Hiscock

Juanita Hiscock

7 August 1936 – 4 April 2019

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Juanita Hiscock age 82.  Juanita passed peacefully away in the Palliative Care Unit at Bridgepoint Hospital with her daughters by her side.

She was born and raised on Bell Island, Newfoundland to Walter and Louise Vokey.  She married Leslie Hiscock in 1958 after moving to St. John’s.

Juanita was the loving mother of daughters Deborah (Rob) and Donna.  Cherished sister to Mabel (Bill, deceased), Joan (Frank), Rosaline (Chuck), Linda (Paul, deceased) brothers Walter (Patsy, deceased) and Fred (Hilda).  She is predeceased by her husband Leslie, sisters Eileen, Elizabeth, Lucy and Verna and brothers Malcolm and Wally.  She will be sadly missed by the many nieces, nephews and their families and her numerous friends.

Juanita’s life was marked by her generous and tenacious spirit.  At 36 she suffered a life-changing stroke; and despite expectations, she fought to successfully regain her speech and mobility.  Throughout her life, “I’m fine” was her constant reply as she battled numerous physical challenges.

In her earlier years she worked in St. John’s as an aid at The Exon House and she managed the canteen at The Hub; both she loved.  She was an active volunteer for numerous caring organizations – The Heart & Stroke Foundation, The Canadian Cancer Society, The Salvation Army and, of course, The Dovercourt Baptist Church.  Visiting seniors and the sick, volunteering in Sunday School, supporting foster children in Africa – her generous personality seemed boundless.  Despite not having grandchildren, she was the grandmother to many children whom she babysat and cared for over the years.

She had a beautiful smile that touched everyone she met; an iron will that helped her persevere through challenges that would have defeated many, and she will be sorely missed by those whose lives she touched.

A memorial service will be held in Dovercourt Baptist Church, 1140 Bloor Street West at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 13th.

For those who wish, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, 2300 Yonge St #1300, Toronto, ON M4P 1E4.
