I had the good fortune of teaching with Derek in Edmonton. We became good friends and managed to stay in touch and even hook up for golf a few times throughout the decades. While in Edmonton, Derek became one of the founding fathers of the Fryday Nite Club, a group of like-minded individuals who believed Friday nights were meant for celebration with good friends and great music. My memories of Derek will always be filled with the laughter and fun times we shared. My deepest condolences to Derek's family and loved ones.

My sincere condolences to Derek's family.
I have worked with Derek for a few years at Boehringer Ingelheim but I have had the chance to get to know him through our passion for fly fishing. I can still see him, in its very own and unique way, feverishly trying to figure out what the browns were keying on and change flies every few casts during our outings on the Grand... He was the only person I know who could make a mediocre day on the river that much fun. He always found a way to make us laugh, no matter the situation.
Generous, caring, funny...That's who Derek was to me and I am sure for many others.
I still hear your contagious laughter sir...
Thanks for the great memories.
Bon voyage mon Ami.

Was very saddened to learn of Derek's passing. I appreciated the witty humour he shared and of course that infectious laugh. Derek and I were hired within weeks of each other at Boehringer Ingelheim. Having the same first name and me being the younger he referred to me as "young Derek" and he did not want old, so he opted for "good-looking Derek". Respecting my elders I gave him that.
I am blessed to of walked this earth within your presence, Rest peacefully good-looking Derek...

My deepest condolences to the family for your loss.Truly heartbreaking. Our Heavenly Father gives us a beautiful thought when He promises us that soon death will be "swallowed up forever." (1 Cor. 15:54) Along with this, God also guarantees that ones who have died will be able to live again. (John 5:28,29) I hope these encouraging scriptures can bring you some comfort during this difficult time.

Derek and I met through mutual friends shortly after finishing University and remained close friends for some 40 years. Derek was an amazing friend, truly someone you could count on. It's a rare quality and I think I will miss that the most.
His well documented humour always provided joy, but often insight as well. He was intellectually challenging and he was passionate. Derek was truly someone engaged in life. A life cut far too short, and an ending faced with great grace and courage.
Rest in Peace my friend.

My sincere condolences to all the Davidson family on the passing of Derek.
I have very fond and lasting
memories of Derek over the past 25 or so years while he was in HR, during his time in Sales and Marketing and since we both retired from BICL. While I returned to Newfoundland and he to Toronto we stayed in contact with one another.
I must congratulate the family for a very well written obituary. You did not miss a single attribute of his being or personally. It spoke to everything I know of him, especially his love of fishing. As so often he and I and Oscar Virgillio would leave after work and travel to the Grand River to fly fish. Oscar falling in and getting wet and Derek giving him the gears with humor only Derek knew how to do so.
After retiring to Nfld. We often spoke or emailed and met when is was back in Ontario and he planned to one day come and fish on Red Indian Lake where I now own a cabin. Unfortunately time, illness and place didn’t
allow that to happen. So my dear friend as I cast my fly line in hopes of hooking that “big” one you will always be in my mind and prayers.
Until me meet again I leave with you a poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson titled:
Crossing the Bar
“Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,
But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.
Twilight and evenig bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;
For tho’ from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have cross’d the bar.

Very sad and shocked to learn of Derek's passing last weekend .
Two weeks ago I was just thinking that I should track down Derek as we had lost contact over the last two years .
Glad to learn that Derek found true love with Manuela .
Derek and I managed to attend two high schools together - in Montreal and in Toronto - because of our Dads' work transfers to Toronto .
Derek and I were the co-founders of the Vintage Music Club at North Toronto Collegiate Institute .Over the years music was a bond for us . Derek actually had a short stint a lead singer in a little rock band in Toronto we formed and we played at a few local clubs . Not sure if Leigh or Ian know that .
I hope to attend the rememberance of Derek at Humphreys next week .

My deepest condolences go to Derek's family. Derek and I worked together at Boehringer Ingelheim for 7 years. Derek's quick wit, unorthodox laugh and somewhat jaded senses of humor could always be counted on to make even the most mundane day brighter and fun. People looked forward just to see Derek enter the room! Things would always get more interesting and people would have an immediate smile just waiting to hear his commentaries on whatever the current subject matter was. Of course these comments were often completely unforeseen, hilarious and caught everyone off guard. To quote Derek "they didn't see that one coming!".
Derek you were loved and you will be missed...
