I am sad to hear of Reverend Hartley passing. I knew him through my work as he was the Pastor at our Remembrance Day ceremonies. He added greatly to them. I also knew him through Chow QiGong, whose classes we hold in S. Andrews Church. He was a kind compassionate soul. I am sorry for your loss.

Barb, Bruce, and Jenn
It is with great sadness that we received the News of Johns passing. John and yourselves were a welcome candle in the window when I first arrived in Toronto. John was there to keep pushing me through mental breakdowns associated with moving into such a large city and stood number two clergy at our wedding at Our Lady of Lourdes in Toronto. We will never forget his kindness and strength of spirit. When I get back home as we are dealing with a flooded house here in Alberta I will send you some of the wedding pictures from 1989 as we now have made it 30 years and John was a big part of that.

So sorry to hear of the death of the best friend of my youth and I will forever remember and cherish the last few times we had to reminisce, especially the last high school reunion. Even though we didn`t see much of each other over the years, the remembrances of our youth at ``the Village`` and our school and everything else that we shared will always be looked upon with fond memories. We wish to best to the family and our thoughts are with you all.

I am beyond saddened to hear of Dr Hartley’s passing. As a new funeral director, I have been forever touched and shaped by him: how he conducts services, his words, how he treats families. He was my favourite. My deepest condolences.

We are so sorry to hear this news. Dr. Hartley was so kind and caring... He was always there to help. He is one of the best ministers I've worked with! We were fortunate to have Dr. Hartley as our minister at St. Andrew's...he truly touched everyone's lives. We will miss him terribly...
Our prayers and deepest sympathy to Barbara, Jennifer, Bruce and the rest of the family. May God guide and comfort you.

I would like to add my condolences to John’s family on behalf of my sister, Mary (Penner) Francis, who was a member of his congregation in Ottawa, and through whom I met John. He obviously had a very fine ministry within the United Church for many years & deserves recognition for his many achievements on all levels. When I was a young minister, it was said that 1/3 of all ministers of the United Church came from the Maritimes, & I knew a few of them, all fun-loving, & good people, of whom John is a good example. I know his family can be very proud of him & will miss him terribly, but will always be inspired by his life among them. God bless! Hugh Gemmell

Barbara, Bob, children and grandchildren... There are no words, my heart aches,, I am reminded of what someone had told me once and I think it can be related to John. When we leave the platform and get on the train we meet many people as we make the journey. Some get on with us and share our life and others get off without ever saying a word, but others touch our lives and ride the train to our final destination sharing with us along the way, wisdom, sadness, happiness and knowing we have been touched forever... That was John. Please know I think of you all constantly. Love Jane and family

I am deeply saddened to learn of John's death.
For those of us who were associated with John through Funeral Service, we witnessed his comforting ministry to those who were grieving. His compassion, love and gentle empathy touched and healed countless families; and his ministry to them and to myself remains real, genuine and measurable
To his family and our Lord, thank you for blessing us with his unwavering friendship and love.
"Well done, good and faithful servant"
