Obituary of Gordon Hunter

GORDON KEEN HUNTER

It is with great sorrow, the family of Gordon announces his passing on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at the age of 95. Much loved father of Rita and Rosalyn; and dear ‘Uncle Gord’ to his nieces and nephews, Gordon Baker, Gail Gautier, Linda Sheldon, Janet Comeau, Annabel Stokes, Gary Colbert, Gail Johnston, Colleen Kozak and Sharon Thorpe. Gordon was predeceased by his beloved wife, Ruby and his sisters, Dorothy, Margaret, Mary and Shirley.

Always fascinated by aviation, Gordon trained as a navigator with the Royal Canadian Air Force after graduating from high school. Having lost school chums in WWII, he wasted no time in setting the course for his future.

Gordon graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Applied Science Civil Engineering Degree and University of California Berkeley with a Master of Engineering.  He enjoyed an illustrious career as a civil engineer at the Ontario Ministry of Transportation and Communications for more than 30 years, designing and constructing Ontario roads and highways.

Gordon spent many happy summers with his family at the cottage on Lake Rosseau in Muskoka and winters along the beaches of Fort Walton, Florida after retiring. You could always find Gordon with a camera in hand as he loved photography, on the golf course or tuned into his favourite big band music station, but Saturday nights were always devoted to watching the hockey game on television.

The family is incredibly grateful to the entire team at the Sunnybrook Veterans Centre for all the care he received throughout his years of living there and, most recently, during his last final weeks.

A celebration of life ceremony will be planned for family in the spring when he is interred at Christ Church Gregory Cemetery in Muskoka.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Sunnybrook Veteran’s Comfort Fund, at donate.sunnybrook.ca/tribute.  Condolences, photographs and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymilesnewbigging.com.
