Had the privilege of serving with the Royal Commission headed by him. He served his country well. And was a devoted Canadian.

Dear Adrian and family,
We were so saddened to hear of Donald’s passing.
We had an opportunity to speak briefly with Donald at his book signing and to tell him how much we have enjoyed living at 2709 for the last few years. He shared with us his fondness for this special place in Uxbridge that held so many wonderful family memories.
It is truly a privilege for us to live amongst the forests that reflect Donald’s passion and spirit for this treasured spot.
Our thoughts are with you,
Kathryn Shaver and Douglas Hyatt

My heartfelt condolences to family and friends of Donald Stovel Macdonald. I knew Mr. Macdonald by réputation first and had the pleasure of meeting and conversing with him at liberal functions as I had been in various elected leadership roles with the Liberal Party of Canada. His legacy will live on, not only in Canadian history books but in the minds of Canadians as a “man of service” for the people of Canada, his advocacy on issues which matter, and in the hearts of his colleagues, friends and family.

Dear Adrian. We have never met, but I wanted you to know that your husband was such a huge part of my mother's life. She for many years assisted him with his work with the Liberals - pretty well until she passed away in 1975, and thought the world of him. So sorry to see the world has lost him. Best wishes to you. How I remember my Member of Parliament.
It was 1969 and I was a second year political science student at U of T. My MP was the Hon Donald Macdonald. As part of one course, I wrote Mr. Macdonald seeking information on being an MP and Cabinet Minister. Several weeks later, I received a four page hand written letter. Wow, I thought. I guess I would receive a departmental form letter. It was only many years later as Chief of Staff to Ontario Cabinet Minister, Dr. Bette Stephenson that I figured out why it was hand written. “Thumper” had House duty. So, as an evening debate was held in the House of Commons, my MP was looking after his constituent. Several years ago, I saw .Mr. Macdonald and relayed the story. His eyes lit up and he let go a big laugh. So did Mrs. Macdonald.
Thank you Sir.

Dear Adrian, You may not remember us but my husband Jim and I were neighbors on Marlborough Avenue from 1995 to 1998. We extend our sincere condolences on the loss of your beloved husband Donald.
I wish to share with you a heartwarming image I still recall all these years later. It was Valentine's Day and a major snow storm had hit our city. I was in my car driving down Yonge Street and there, trudging through the snow on the sidewalk, was Donald clutching a beautiful bouquet of yellow roses. That brought a smile to my face and thoughts of what a fortunate woman you were to have such a thoughtful, romantic husband,
Although we were "on the other side of the floor" politically, we always held the Honourable Donald Macdonald in the highest regard. He was a true statesman and a credit to Canada.
Sincerely,
Beverley Brady

Adrian, I just wanted to let you know that I have just seen the beautifully written obituary in the
Globe and Mail, and wanted to let you know that I am thinking of you. We saw each other so recently
at the Shoppers' Drug Mart and I appreciated so much your update on this special man.
I have such fond memories of him especially in Ottawa, and of both our times there.
To have such a wonderful love is so hard to lose, and I know there will be many, including me,
sending you strength and our friendship.
Sincere wishes,
Perky

My sincerest sympathies to you Adrian, and to your loving family. I had the great honour and pleasure of working for Don from 1985 until 2001, at McCarthy Tétrault. Although I couldn't follow him to England when he was appointed High Commissioner, I still considered myself his assistant during that time. I have never met anyone who deserved the term honourable more. I was totally intimidated when I started working for him at a time when he was just winding up the Macdonald Commission. But he was always able to make me believe in myself and get the job done. He will be missed.

Heartfelt condolences to you, Adrian, and to the extended family that you and Donald shared.
When I heard of his passing and read your memorial starting with the three simple works Donald has died, it made me think of a poem in my long-cherished book of Leonard Cohen's work in The Spice Box of Earth.
‘There Are Some Men’, by Leonard Cohen
Leonard Cohen November 18, 2016
There are some men
who should have mountains
to bear their names to time.
Grave-markers are not high enough
or green,
and sons go far away
to lose the fist
their father’s hand will always seem.
I had a friend:
he lived and died in mighty silence
and with dignity,
left no book, son, or lover to mourn.
Nor is this a mourning-song
but only a naming of this mountain
on which I walk,
fragrant, dark, and softly white
under the pale of mist.
I name this mountain after him.

My sincere condolences on the loss of Mr. Macdonald. I was his secretary at McCarthy & McCarthy (as it was then) from 1979 to 1985. When I started I was only 24 years old and really had no idea of what it meant to work for a former Minister of Finance. It was supposed to be temporary but to my great luck Mr. Macdonald was happy with me and I worked with him until I went on maternity leave to have my son. He was the most wonderful man to work with - so kind, so generous, so funny, so patient. I was so very very lucky to have known him. He will be missed.

A great Canadian was Donald Stovel Macdonald. He will be missed but not forgotten. As many Canadians, I was familiar with Donald’s work, reputation and history and was fortunate to meet him at Liberal gatherings in his later years.. He was indeed a “man of service” to his family, to the Liberal Party of Canada, to all organizations he represented, to all the causes he advocated for, to all the people and his country, Canada.
My heartfelt condolences to the Macdonald family.
