I met and knew Mark at University - a Montreal McGill student taken under the direction and care of Toronto Fraternity members for the reactivation of the local Quebec chapter. He stood out of the overall as one who reached out with wit and caring. We enjoyed time together in New Orleans at a convention - atop the Royal Orleans hotel made famous in a James Bond movie set in the same city with Roger Moore. We floated and chatted together, aptly, in their rooftop pool at sunrise. A fond memory among others.
Born in the very same year - I now await this month my 60th birthday. Outliving my father by 8 years so far, one easily strays into thinking;"Why him? Why so young? Why do others of lesser caring carry on and the good ones die so young?"
May I speak to those left behind now mourning in their own, private ways? I know that we exist beyond this lifetime on earth. I believe it with all my being. Eternity gets short shrift when merely defined as a very long time. It's actually not time at all and sits 'outside' of it. I say this because if you can for just a moment accept this proposal, consider the consequences. When Mark's spirit left the lean body we knew of him, that "him" moved onto a next experience because life energy like all others cannot be started or destroyed, only changed. Arriving in that place, even those of us here, now, in time all there to greet him outside of this timeline. Not left behind, he and we all can rejoice in this amazing reunion of spirit, an amazing homecoming beyond understanding. Generations before and after gathered to greet Mark.
I am for health reasons unable to join you for the visitation or funeral. I am confident to be with you in spirit however and with you all in this mysterious way in the special gathering he now enjoys with us all. Mark for myself - a gift from the God I love and believe in. Thank you for allowing me to share.

To the Poole family,
I am truly saddened by the passing of your son, your brother, and your dad.
Mark and I go way back. Easily over 50 years.
We went right through St. Timothy’s together…from grades 2 through 8.
We followed each other to Brebeuf High School after that.
I believe we must have been on the same hockey team for 6 or 7 straight years.
Always competing to see who could be the leading goal scorer.
We use to board the Shepard bus with our golf clubs slung over our shoulders to play either Don Valley or Tam O’Shanter.
We would play until dark…easily 36 holes or more.
As altar boys at St. Timothy’s, we made a bet one year to see who could serve mass more days through Lent.
We ended in a tie as we both served all 40 days.
When my family moved to Montreal during my grade 10, we never lost track of each other.
That was totally thanks to Mark.
He kept in touch and kept me current with our friends and classmates…the Beaton’s, the Knapp’s, the Baillargeon’s.
What a small world that my wife of 30 years knew Mark before I introduced them.
That's because Maureen hung around with Mark’s sister Mary as a student at Senator O’Connor.
Mark was always witty, clever and fun to be with.
When he asked about you or a family member, it wasn’t just polite, idle conversation.
He remembered what you told him and he banked it away with terrific recollection.
He was a people person.
I was surprised and thrilled to see him appear unannounced at the funeral service for my mother this past July.
After the service, my four sisters and brother chatted, shared stories and laughed along with him at the celebration that followed.
After returning to Sarasota after the funeral I got a phone call from Mark.
He simply told me how much fun it was catching up with the Doherty’s.
That was the last time we spoke.
I will miss him.

Catherine, Spencer and Graeme,
I am so sorry to hear about Mark's passing. You have my deepest condolences. I met Mark early in my days as a Zete from Chicago (Sigma Phi Chapter 81) and he has been a friend ever since. Mark was truly a unique person and I know that he truly cared about his family despite his internal issues. He always made me feel at home when I was able to visit TO with the Boyz from Theta Xi. Mark was a true "brother" and I will never forget our great times together.

I am so deeply saddened by Mark's passing. We have lost a precious, brilliant and beautiful child who was one of the best and brightest men I have ever had the blessing and privilege to know.
From the first time we met, I sensed Mark's deep and sensitive heart and soul that felt so profoundly the moments of life that he lived.
I will always remember his laugh, his smile, his quick wit and his fertile mind that embraced so many profound ideas and ideals. He was a joy and an inspiration for so many people, for such a long time.
I know, as I'm sure you do, that he is finally, blessedly, at peace, safe in the arms of a loving God who embraces him as one of his cherished and beloved children.
My heart sends him, and all of you, so much love. As does Quinn, who was deeply saddened to learn of Mark's passing.
I wish Mark a bon voyage and safe journey and shall celebrate and always remember a wonderful man.
Please let everyone in the family know that Quinn and I are with them in spirit, sharing a deep sense of loss.
