Obituary of Dennis Henson

DENNIS ERNEST HENSON

(1936 – 2018)

We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our husband, father and grandfather, Dennis Ernest Henson on Wednesday, September 26, 2018.  Dad was born in Toronto on February 26, 1936, to Ernie and Lola Henson (deceased).  He was their only child and according to Lola, he was the perfect child.  He was an accomplished pianist and loved sports, excelling in baseball, football, basketball (captain of the team) and later curling.  Nicknamed Marty at the time, he attended Bathurst Heights where he met and fell in love with his best friend, Elizabeth (Libby) Coon.  After completing high school, Dad spent the summer working at Lake Louise in Alberta as a waiter and asked his parents to ensure Libby was waiting for him at the train on his return to Toronto.  Beginning a 61-year journey, they were married on September 21, 1957 at Lawrence Park Community Church and had three children, Deborah Hutchings (Roger), Stacey Murphy (Glenn) and David Henson (Christine).

Dad spent over 35 years as an employee of Grand and Toy in various roles working his way up the ladder as the company grew.  He took great pride in his work at Head Office as Office Furniture Manager.

Dad was an excellent curler and he and mom were members of Thornhill Country Club for approximately 50 years, playing mixed together and men’s and ladies too, developing many lasting friendships.  Dad won many bonspiels including the Canada Life Trophy three times.

His grandchildren were his treasures: Brendan, Tyler, Shannon, Nicole, Caroline and Chloe.  Dads favourite times were spent at the family cottage on Lake Opinicon on the Rideau Canal.  He was truly happiest during the quiet times; fishing with his family, playing card games and watching the boats go by at Davis Lock.

Thank you to the wonderful nurses at One Kenton Place in Toronto.  Throughout his illness, you recognized his kind and gentle nature.  Your smiles and compassion made all the difference in the world.

The family will receive friends at the Humphrey Funeral Home A.W. Miles – Newbigging Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 30th.  A funeral service will take place on Monday, October 1st at 11:00 a.m.  Condolences, photographs and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymiles.com.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Sunnybrook Hospital Foundation, Brain Sciences Program or the Chaffey’s Lock and Area Heritage Society would be appreciated.
