It is with sadness that I learned of the death if Cliff. As a young MSc graduate in 1979 I was assigned to work with Cliff in Radar Meteorology at the Cloud Physics Research Division of the Atmospheric Environment Service in Downsview. Cliff was very patient and a mentor who was generous with his time and knowledge. We developed a relationship between radar reflectivity and rainfall which was used in the national weather radar network for years. A life well-lived.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Cliff’s family. Unfortunately, I cannot make the service on Friday, but I would like to share some comments. I met Cliff when I joined the Cloud Physics Research Division of Environment Canada (EC) in 1972 and was at his retirement party many years later. He was a great person to work with, very knowledgeable about radar and cloud physics, especially helpful for someone starting his career. His work led to the purchase and installation of the King Weather Radar, north of Toronto, which is still in use today. This operational/research Doppler radar, in a great location overseeing a significant fraction of Canada’s population, was the first of its kind in Canada and was latter adopted as the prototype for the EC radar network.
Attached you will find a photo of Cliff in front of the NRC Twin Otter (5th from left in back row) during one of our aircraft campaigns out of Thunder Bay in 1978. Cliff was the flight director on a Beech 18 designed to fly underneath clouds seeded with silver iodide by a T-33 with the Twin Otter flying at upper levels looking at cloud microphysical changes to see if we could enhance rainfall.
A sad time but we have many good memories.
