In the old days you could never call your parents’ friends by their first names. Hence Jane was “Aunt Jane” and Ted (my Godfather) was “Uncle Ted”.
They were our parents friends for over sixty years ! Always faithful, always there. “Aunt Jane”came into our lives due to her colleague and friend Ruth Stenger (also an occupational therapist) our Mother’s (Beverley Stapells) neighbour from High Park. And Uncle Ted was our Father’s (Bredin Stapells) neighbour as a little boys living in Hog’s Hollow.
Aunt Jane would babysit us and play fashion with we three little girls when my Mother threw out her back for months. She shortlisted our Father so that he could have his agonizing hip replaced. She gave us motherly wise advice even up to a few days ago from her hospital bed.
I loved reading with her her favorite book ... her scrapbook with all Uncle Ted’s romantic cards, her drawings with witty remarks. It was wonderful to witness their love.
We will miss you Aunt Jane.

The memories of Jane for the Stapells family could fill pages. Jane and Ted were our parents' - Bredin and Beverley - closest friends. In fact they were responsible for Jane and Ted meeting. The 2 couples' shared celebrations of wedding annniversaries for many years, their trips together to Europe, Bermuda, New York, Florida, and the many outings to the Shaw Festival were highlights. Jane was always interested in their 3 daughters - Victoria, Alexandra, Elizabeth - watching us grow up, hosting beautifully prepared parties before our marriages, and inviting us into their lives. Ted's 2 children, Bruce and Janet were childhood friends. After Beverley died in 2006, it was Jane who became a second mother to us and remained an unwavering friend to Bredin. In recent years, Alexandra and Victoria , who live in Europe, but come to Toronto frequently, always made a point of visiting Jane at her home on Rosehill Ave and laterly at Amica. Our last visit was just a litle over a month ago. Her advice, guidance and affection towards us will remain with us forever. It was a priviliege to know and love our "Aunt" Jane, a brave, elegant, dedicated woman who took on old age with dignity and humour. We will miss her.
