I was at a dinner for my parish All Saints Catholic Church, talking Etobicoke politics at our table. We wondered if Mr. Gillespie was still with us, which sadly took me here. He was a great businessman, patriot, politician and family man (which is why I voted for him). May he R.I.P.

I have just learned of Alastair's passing. Though I have been overseas for some years now, I remember Alastair most vividly. He was of great assistance to the Champlain Society during a very difficult time. His thoughtful counsel and optimism were crucial in sustaining the Society in those years. Similarly, his quick and enthusiastic support provided significant encouragement to Library and Archives Canada and added to the unique original sources available now and long into the future for the study of Canada's economic and political development in the mid-19th Century. Dear Cynthia and family. Bill and I are unable to attend the memorial for your Father as we will be in the Maritimes. We would have wished to be there. Your Father was a productive and proud Canadian. I especially remember him from being neighbours north of Claremont 48 years ago! Our paths crossed in several delightful ways. His curiosity and charm made him first in the neighbourhood to visit the local “hippies” new “hand made” house!! He is remembered fondly. Sarah (and for Bill) VanderBurgh
