Shocked by the news of Dr. Messner's passing. I am a BMT patient 2005. Can't put into words what this great doctor did to me, not just his skill and greatness in the medical aspect of the process, but the psychological and human side of this difficult road.
I always talk about Dr. Messner whenever the topic is brought up, not so much about my illness but his very unique humanity, care, and patience.
God rest his soul and give the family peace and comfort knowing that so many lives were touched, healed, and cared for by this amazing doctor.

It is extremely sad to heare, that Dr. Messner passed away! I never will forget the time working as a medical Student on his bone marrow transplantation ICU. He was extremely appreciated by his staff and his patients. His professional competence as a physician and a scientist was highly regarded until his unexpected death and known even here in europe.
Many physicians, including me, who had the priviledge to learn from him, are losing the best teacher one could imagine - and an unbeliefable good friend.
I wish the best to the Messner family!
Yours sincerely

I was shocked and overwhelmed to hear today of the passing of Dr Messner.I arrived at the old PMH late at night on Aug 1st 1978. I was extremely ill and
surprised most everyone to have survived the trip from NL. Dr Messner and his team spent 4
intensive weeks preparing me for the BMT on Aug 25,1978.His endless patience in explaining all the medical procedures to me and my family was remarkable. He was available whenever needed. I once awoke at 3:00 am to find him sitting on my bed making an adjustment to my IV. I was there until December. Thanks to this brilliant, compassionate man I just this week celebrated the 40th anniversary of my BMT. We kept in touch over the years and spoke about our advancing age in a jovial manner, knowing the alternative which has arrived. To my sorrow.
My sincere condolences to his family for your loss.
My yearly donation to the PMH bone marrow transplant program will continue.

On behalf of my family and myself I wish to extend our sincerest condolences to the Messner family in the loss of Dr. Messner. I happened to learn of his passing just today and was so saddened to read the news. He was my late husband Gord's physician and was the most kind and thoughtful doctor anyone could wish for. Gord was diagnosed with myleodysplasia in 2003 which later developed into leukemia and we lost him in 2008. Because of his diagnosis he became involved with AAMAC, was on the board of Canadian Blood Services and was a strong advocate for patients with similar illnesses. We were so blessed that Dr. Messner accepted him as his patient and he thoroughly enjoyed the lengthy chats he had with Dr. Messner about the latest treatments available to him and also other topics unrelated to medicine. At the end he was under the care of other very capable physicians in the hospital but Dr. Messner took the time to visit him and I will never forget how kind he was and told Gord how much he had done for other patients and that he was leaving behind a wonderful legacy. At a later meeting of AAMAC Dr. Messner was giving a presentation and he dedicated it to "his friend Gord". He was indeed a brilliant physician and a friend whom Gord looked up to and trusted. He gave him hope when we thought there was none. He will always be remembered by us. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time. Take care.
Kindest regards,
Carole Sanford & family

I just heard the news and was saddened to hear it. I am one of Dr. Messner’s patients - a 14.5 year survivor post transplant. I loved my visits at the hospital where Dr. Messner would come in and with a smile tell me I was doing so well. He had a way of making all of his patients feel like a ‘star student’. I also loved seeing Dr. Messner on his bike for the 3 years that I rode in the Ride to Conquer Cancer. He will be missed. By myself and plenty of others. We appreciate the legacy that he left us. Sincere Condolances.

Sandy has loaded a photo of me, Bob (a donor), Hans and my sister Tannis, a former BMT recipient. We are standing below a congratulations banner since we were celebrating 35 successful and wonderful years since our transplant. It was made even more special since the master himself, our wonderful Hans, came to join in on the festivities. That was part of the story, since he had become a friend to Tannis in the intervening years. We laughed and cried together.
It is impossible to completely express our appreciation for all that Hans (as well as his many talented colleagues at PMH) has given to our family. How do you fully say "thanks" for giving my sister another chance at life when it seemed impossible at that time?
Lacking anything better, we simply say 'Thank You Hans'. We will remember you always. To his family, thank you for sharing this brilliant and wonderful person.

I wish to express my sincere condolences to the Messner family over the loss of a wonderful and brilliant man, Dr. Messner. I am the longest-surviving bone marrow transplant patient for chronic myellogenous leukemia in Canada, second in the world, thanks to Dr. Messner (my transplant was done on July 5, 1979)- he saved my life. I;ll never forget how kind, so reasssuring, so patient, understanding, dedicared and professional he was to me and my concerned family, He always was very optimistic about everything and took the time to explain to you to put you at ease. We were always crazy about him and felt confident that all would be fine. And of course, his contagious smile was so warm. We've lost a real stalwort and outstanding physician and humanitarian. May his memory and accomplshments be an inspiration for us all.

Dr. Messner was one of the kindest and most caring people while writing about medical science advances in Canada.
Selfless, he went to great lengths to help me research a book about the Canadian discovery of stem cells by his mentor, Dr. Ernest "Bun" McCulloch, and Dr. James Till. All the while he was busy saving lives through the allogeneic stem cell bone marrow transplantation program that he led. He was an exemplary human being.
Please accept my heartfelt condolences.

Dear Sandy and family,
I truly believe that Hans would not have left 'us', if he didn't feel everyone was going to be alright.
From a patients point of view, that was his biggest gift - he always helped us through our darkest moments, and provided a shining light on the other side.
Even from Australia, I can feel the warmth of that light and I have comfort knowing everyone is sharing in that warmth.
Hans changed my family's history and for that we will remain forever grateful. What a remarkable and loving man.

I just want to send my condolences to the entire family. I remember as an Oncology resident in the early 80's rounding with Hans on the weekends when we would spend 3-4 hours reviewing patients. This was a tremendous learning experience and it was clear how dedicated Hans was to his patients. Since 1985 it has been an honor to be a colleague of his. He will be missed but fondly remembered. He was a true gentleman.

We think back to our first memory of meeting both of you at Newman. The value system he showed then was integral to who he was as a man, a husband, father and grandfather as well as a physician.. Sharing time with you recently was a gift that will forever be cherished. i/we remember reminiscing about his life as he prepared his memoirs for his family, the picture of him from 1984, as "the Thinker", reflections on the honor and privilege of working in oncology, and philosophical reflections and then he sat at his desk and his work was done!
He has been a blessing to so many and will live on in the memories and gift of life for so many people who have received transplants. Now the naming of the program will bring his importance to the awareness of many now as well as in future generations.
Much love,
Mary and Bruce
