We were saddened to read in this morning’s Globe & Mail that Doreen had died July 17. We had known Doreen and Jim for the many years that they lived at 1 Bachelor Place next door to our house at number 3 where we continue to live to this day. They were good neighbours, courteous, polite, friendly and devoted to their faith. When the Pope came to Downsview Park in Toronto years ago, Doreen and Jim went to see him and came away with renewed conviction and deeply impressed by the spiritual experience.
Often, when either or both of them were gardening on the front lawn, we would wander over and engage them in conversation, especially with Jim who loved to interact with people, was an astute businessman and knowledgeable about the drug industry. We recall his sonorous voice, radiant smile and his willingness to discuss matters that we found of mutual interest. Latterly, Doreen had unfortunately developed Alzheimer’s disease and it was Jim who acted as caregiver until his unexpected and untimely death.
We admired both Doreen and Jim for their intelligence and moral qualities. We didn’t get to know the children as they had left the house by the time the Dohertys moved to Bachelor Place with the exception of Kerry, who still lived at home and even babysat for us on at least several occasions.
Please accept our most sincere sympathies on this loss. We shall remember both Doreen and Jim with fond memories and much affection.
Michael & Karen Sanders

It is with much sadness that I am offering my condolences to the Doherty family.
Doreen was "one of a kind" whom I shall never forget. She was such a sweet loving lady who captured the hearts of all who had the pleasure of having known her.
Rest in peace Doreenie. You are dearly missed.
