LYLA NICHOLS BARCLAY
(nee Nichols)
Lyla passed away peacefully, with her family present, at North York General Hospital on Tuesday, July 10, 2018 in her 88th year of life. Lyla is survived by her loving husband of over 58 years Tony, and her children Martin, Mark, Douglas and John. She will be greatly missed by her eight grandchildren; Daniel, Liam, Nicholas, Miranda, Perrin, Megan, Alexa and Kate. Predeceased by sisters Edith and Beverly and by brother Bud (Percy).
Lyla was born in 1930 to Canadian parents in Scarborough, Maine. She lived through hard times but excelled in academics earning a scholarship to Bates College where she completed her undergraduate degree. Lyla moved to Toronto to complete her masters of Social Work at the University of Toronto, while on a job placement with Children’s Aid Society, she met her future husband Tony. They married in 1959. A career as a social worker with the Toronto Board of Education, Lyla’s life was devoted to her family, friends and her community. She was active in local politics including the boards of Frankland Home and Schools Association (PTA) and Jessie’s Shelter.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Hot House Restaurant, 35 Church Street Toronto, on Monday, July 16 at 1:00 p.m. Donations to the Parkinson’s Foundation in lieu of flowers are encouraged. Condolences, photographs and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymilesnewbigging.com.
