The South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) was already established when Garth came to assist with a capacity building project funded by the Canadian Government. He made a tremendous contribution to building the confidence and the management capacity in those early years of SAQA and set in place a management culture that we are very proud to be part of. We will always remember him as a warm-hearted professional with a deep concern for his fellow human being. We mourn his death with his family and also celebrate his life and is thankful for him sharing his vast skills and knowledge with us. May soul rest in peace!

Learning of Garth's death reverberated deeply because of the close relationship Garth & Margie shared with my parents Charles & Beulah Rushton. There are so many stories of love & friendship. Margie - I'll never ever forget Garth's words at my father's funeral. I also had the privilege of working with Garth when he was Vice-President, Academic at Georgian College. How our lives intersect. My father hired Garth right out of university when Dad was Director, Adult Education at Conestoga College in Waterloo. What a privilege it was for me to work with Garth when he held a senior leadership role at Georgian. You touched so many lives Garth. We'll all miss you. Ruthanne (Rushton) Krant

Garth was strong, steady, thoughtful and inclusive. A Gentle man in the truest sense of the word.
I got to know Garth through the Canadian University Dubai and in our time together, I witnessed his stellar qualities of leadership and kindness.
He will be missed by all!

Sorry to read of Garth's passing. He was a fine man and every decade or so since the late 60's our paths would cross. We'd recall days with Charles Rushton and share the issues of student success and College Administration. He will be missed. Our thoughts are with you.

So very sorry to hear of Garth's passing, He was a wonderful mentor to me and I learned so much from him - the power of a story well told, the enjoyment of shared laughter, and the importance of paying close attention. Although I hadn't seen him for many, many years he stays with me as one of the people in my life who had a profound influence.

Dearest Margie, Greg, Tim, Kelly and families;
I rise on Father’s Day and after contemplating my Dad who’s been gone for 19 years now, I immediately think of Garth and your family and this first one without him for all of you. I am so very sorry for your loss. He was a wonderful man. In my mind, he was a most elegant man, an erudite. The comforting truth I have found, with time, is that those we love never actually die; they live on with us, every day, if we just take them with us. You know what Garth meant to our family, you know that each of us loved him and please know that each of us are remembering him today and holding each of you up in prayer. One of my Dad’s favourite sayings was “a teacher affects eternity, he can never tell where his influence stops.” The same can certainly be said for dearest Garth, for he was certainly a teacher. I lite this candle for Garth, a second father to me, on Father’s Day in his memory by so that you will all know and remember during this dark time, that “all the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light of a single candle.” Much love, Mark Rushton & family of the late Charles Rushton

Garth was President at Canadore College when I was teaching there. He created many changes at the college which were positive and progressive. Garth was always prepared to listen as well as share his ideas about making the college a better place first of all for the students and then the faculty. I remember him as a man of high intelligence, dignity in his treatment of all people, and a man with a great sense of humour.
My condolences to Garth's family and friends.

The world just became a little less wonderful. Garth my friend I will miss your stories and your laughter. But what a legacy you leave! You devoted your life to opening up education to those who would be left behind. You gave me courage and strength in the first year of my presidency.. You became my mentor and my friend.
