So there I was, contemplating my annual delivery of Ian's maple syrup order when my eyes strayed to the Star's obit page and there was his name in print. I came to know Ian as a member of the Land Trust board under his presidency, stayed in touch through my maple deliveries and then ran across him from time to time on visits to the Odette Cancer Centre. It was an honour to have known him. Your loss must be painful but your mourning should be tempered by knowing that he came to the end of a long life well-lived.

I was in his French class at George S Henry S.S. and I recall him as always being calm and having a good sense of humour - probably essential for teaching high school. I'm glad that he went on to have such a wonderful career after teaching.
My condolences to his family.

My condolences to all of Ian's family.
It was so amazing to see what Ian had become in his life
I knew him as a neighbour and a friend in high school
I lived about 5 doors south of Ian on Aberdeen street in Oshawa
As a small boy he had some health issues and he was quite frail
I remember going to his home and playing in his room as he couldn't always go out.
I remember a train set and a butterfly collection.
To hear that he had such a full life seems like such a wonderful miracle

I was a director on the first board of the Haliburton Highlands Land Trust with Ian at the helm. His amazing energy and dedication ensured that the organization got off to a good start. I recall his passion for conservation and his care for the community, both human and wild. I also seem to recall a passion for butter tarts that one of the other directors often brought to the meetings ...
I would sometimes bump into him at art events and I was so honoured that he attended the opening of my exhibition at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery years ago. And he knew that it was the Highlands that gave me the inspiration for the bronze beavers that are installed outside that gallery to this day. We shared an appreciation of the natural world and a commitment to doing what we could to preserve it for the generations to come. He will be greatly missed.
