Obituary of Margaret Alice Hurst
MARGARET ALICE HURST
(nee Telford)
1938 - 2018
Passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Saturday, March 24th.
Beloved and devoted wife of George for 59 years, she is survived by daughter Erin (Jeff), sons Cameron and Darrell (Stephanie), grandchildren Charlotte, Eli, Lola, Finley and Penelope and sisters Mollie (John), Toronto, and Nellie (Bertie) and Jean, Ballymena, Northern Ireland.
Alice was the rock of the family. Always there for her kids whether they were coming home for lunch or back after school. Always there for George, no matter whether he was coming back from a meeting at the church or his regular twice-weekly tennis match. She was a fixture at Leaside United Church, not only as the long-standing secretary, but as active member of many clubs and groups. On most Sunday’s you could find her in the front row of the balcony, paying special attention at the Christmas service, to hold enough seats for her growing family as they made their way up from the house.
Alice was the master of her kitchen and perfected the art of making the exact amount of food to feed her brood without leaving leftovers. To her, an empty plate was how you show your appreciation for her creation. Desserts in the Hurst family took on a life of their own as she always found a way to surprise and delight George with something special to go with his tea.
Alice will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandma and a loyal friend who poured her love back into her family and friends in every way possible. She was a tiny woman who will always have a huge place in our hearts.
The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES – NEWBIGGING CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) on Thursday, March 29th from 2:00 – 4:00 and 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held in LEASIDE UNITED CHURCH, 822 Millwood Road, Toronto on Saturday, March 31st at 2.00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Alice's name may be made to the Brain Sciences program at the Sunnybrook Foundation. Condolences, photographs and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymilesnewbigging.com.
