Obituary of Frank Joseph Skain

FRANK JOSEPH SKAIN

It is with great sadness that we announce Dr. Frank Joseph Skain, MD, FRCP, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, March 18, 2018.  Frank was the loving husband of Marilyn Sutherland Skain; brother of Mary Skain (deceased); and son of Joseph and Theresa Skain (deceased). Frank is survived by his eight children, John (Leslie), Cathy (Doug), Peter (Laura), Sandra (D’Arcy), Paul, Tim, Andrew and Elizabeth (Eric); and his eight grandchildren, Caitlin, Madelaine, Avery, Rory, Nate, Sawyer, Finn and Jake.   Frank will also be missed by his many step-children and step-grandchildren in Solon, Ohio and throughout the US.

Born in Toronto on February 22, 1929, Frank was raised in North Toronto and attended St. Michael's College School and the University of Toronto.   He graduated from the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Medicine in 1954. Frank then trained at St Michael’s Hospital and received his specialist certificate in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 1960.

Frank was a well-respected Obstetrician/Gynaecologist in Toronto. He began his medical career at Northwestern General Hospital in 1961, also practicing at Branson Hospital and later at Humber River Regional Hospital.  Throughout his long career he worked passionately to ensure the healthy birth of many of Toronto’s children.

An avid skier and golfer, he spent many years with his children and grandchildren skiing, golfing and playing tennis.   Whether skiing at Devil’s Glen Country Club, traveling to ski resorts around the world or playing tennis and golf at Muskoka Lakes Golf and Country Club, he took great pride in exposing his children to sport.

Frank was a student of history and loved to travel. In his later years, he and Marilyn traveled the globe experiencing the cultures, scenery and beauty of countries around the world. He loved to hear about the travels of his children and would give advice on where to go and what to see.

Frank was a faithful member of the Catholic community in Toronto and Muskoka. He was a parishioner of Holy Rosary Church, Our Lady of the Assumption, and St. John the Baptist in Muskoka.

The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES – NEWBIGGING CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 25th.  Funeral service to be held Monday, March 26th at 10:30 a.m. in HOLY ROSARY CHURCH, 354 St. Clair Avenue West.
