On behalf of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Canada our sincerest condolences with the passing of Col. John "Jack" Clarry .
John had a long and rich life and that included receiving the "Order of Oranje-Nassau" from a very grateful nation. The people of the Netherlands have always remembered the Canadian soldiers who played such a significant role in their Liberation from WWII and we will continue to honor their memory always.
Wishing you strength and with my personal warm regards,

I haven’t seen Cameron in several years but we were delighted to see Andrew in Montreal and what an impressive young man he is.

Dear family and friends of Colonel John Clarry,
My condolences for you loss.
I am saddened by the loss.
He was a great man and an excellent inspiration to all that met him.
At the 2017 Remembrance Day service at York Cemetery Col. Clarry showed up and a new soldier thanked him for his service and the inspiration that made the young soldier want to join the Army and serve his country.
Col John Clarry, it was a great honour to met you and serve with you. I will miss those moments that we chatted about at the entrance to the St. Clair subway station.
Lest we forget. We will remember them.

Dear Family of John Clarry
I first met John in 1973. At that time I was a lawyer associated with another law firm, and was negotiating with him a complicated and in some ways ground-breaking transaction. It was such a pleasure and privilege to work with John on that occasion that it ultimately stimulated me to join McCarthy Tetrault myself. As a result, I had the honour of working alongside him over the course of many years. His gentlemanly courtesy and legal acumen was an inspiration not only to me but to many other lawyers of my generation. He was also greatly admired by our clients and even by clients on opposing sides. In writing this tribute my thoughts are filled with warm memories of him, as well as a deep sadness at his passing, especially when I look at the summary of his life at the beginning of this site. He was a great man!

Dear Family of John Clarry,
I had the privilege of working with John for many years at McCarthy Tetrault, from 1971 onwards. He was a thoughtful mentor and excellent and respected advisor. As Managing Partner, he was a consensus-builder and personified the spirit of fairness and excellence. He was instrumental in the continued growth and development of the firm. In addition, he found time to devote energy and intellect to the community, the profession and the military, as well as his family and friends. We will miss him.
I regret that I will be in Calgary and unable to be present at the funeral service. My thoughts and prayers go with you.
Sincere condolences to you all,
Edward P. Kerwin

I got to know John at the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan, he was one of the original board members and served on the Board from 1990 to 1995. The plan made a lot of moves that were innovative for pension funds at that time. It was very useful for management and the other people on the Board to profit from the wise counsel of John. He never raised his voice, when he spoke everyone took notice. I benefited of his insights not just about law but also on business in general. With warm thoughts and prayers. To John's family:
My condolences on your loss of John Clarry.
I knew John as a newly called lawyer in Toronto in 1969.
I was interviewed by John to work with McCarthy's for a term prior to my departure to London England to study for my LL.M degree.
I worked under his direction on a number of files and learned as much as I could in that limited period of time.
I write today to simply share with you my continuing thanks to John who took the time to discuss with me a personal crisis that was occurring in my life at that time.
He coached me with the wisdom that one only learns as life progresses but that is so acutely needed when the event occurs.
In reading of his death I was reminded of the inspiring role he played in my life which I have kept in mind when I have been called upon to offer similar counsel to my 'students' throughout the course of my career.

I first met your mother and father in the early 1950s when my family, Bob and Naomi Scrivener, lived in a duplex on MacLennan Avenue in North Rosedale. Your darling mother Joy and her family lived on the upper floor while we were on the ground floor...my brother Peter and I would play on the front lawn on the weekends later in the day, and met your Dad as he came to take his date, Joy, out for a special evening. Your father always had a pleasant word, sometimes of caution, as my 4 year old brother swung his baseball bat close to my 5 year old head!!
Decades later I met John Clarry, senior partner at McCarthy 's and my husband, Ed Kerwin's mentor, at frequent McCarthy's events...and John and Joy and I would chuckle over the incident with the baseball bat!
On another note, my aunt, Hazel Thornton Scrivener, was a university friend of Joy's and they remained close throughout their lives. After your mother died, John would enquire after Hazel and they had many happy lunches and cups of tea in the ensuing years.
I have so many very fond memories of your father as a kind, thoughtful, inquisitive and caring person with a twinkle in his eye and an easy love of laughter. He was a remarkable man and led a truly marvelous life. My condolences to you all on his death, hoping that your special memories of life with your Dad and Mother will bring smiles of fond remembrance.. John Clarry's life was so well lived as he was so deeply loved.
sincerely Ann Kerwin
