I did not learn of Francess Halpenny's death until yesterday. She and my mother, Ruth Konrad, were friends and admired each other. I will never forget that Francess drove from Toronto to Kitchener in a snowstorm to attend my stepfather's funeral in Dec 1988. In 1991 she helped bring to publication by UofT Press my mother's idea of a desk calendar reminding the user of important events associated with that week in history, drawn from the Dictionary of Canadian Biography. Many years later, at a conference in Vancouver, she spoke highly of my mother's contributions as a librarian and as a writer for the Encyclopedia of Newfoundland & Labrador. These cherished memories illustrate the gift of loving friendship which Francess so well combined with her wonderful contributions to the intellectual and cultural life of Canada. All of us who join in condolences to Francess' family will remember her with love and gratitude.

I was saddened to read of Francess's passing. I had written to her and had hoped to find an opportunity to visit. She and my parents, Dudley and Margaret Collins, met in Newfoundland during the War, and remained friends throughout their lives. I studied library sceince at McGill and Francess was always a person of respect and admiration for me. A wonderful life!
I have a photo of Francess with my mother, taken in Newfoundland, which I shall try to submit.
With sincere sympathy and wonderful memories.

I was saddened to learn of Francess's passing a few weeks back from the Globe & Mail obituary.
Working as a bibliographies editor at the DCB/DBC was my first professional posting after graduating from the (then) Faculty of Library Science. I still remember the Toronto site on College Street in the 1980s while she was General Editor -- and even, briefly, the house on Prince Arthur just down the street from the grand old Duke of York where the editorial team gathered on Fridays to hoist a pint of Guinness or Stone's Best Bitters.
In retrospect, I appreciate the endless and often thankless fact- and reference-checking involved in preparing DCB volumes according to the rigorous standards established under "FGH's" leadership as a form of post-graduate training for my subsequent career at the University of Toronto. I am pleased to see that one of Francess's final accomplishments was producing an autobiography. "A World of Words". It is fitting that she should have the final word.

Frances was a wonderful person. Toujours généreuse et positive dans ses pensées et ses initiatives. Sans le savoir, elle fut un mentor pour moi. Elle savait écouter et faisait confiance. Can we ask more ?

It was an honour for me to know the wonderful Francess Halpenny however briefly during the mid-'80s to the mid-'90s in relation to my work on Dora Mavor Moore, a theatre colleague and friend of hers. The two women shared many traits: they were formidable but kind, wise and accomplished and larger-than-life, and pioneers in their fields. They don't make them like that any more. Francess Halpenny will be missed.

Hi Jane,
I was saddened to hear of the loss of your dear Aunt Francess. What an accomplished woman she was! I am sure your Dad and all the Halpenny's were very proud of her. It seems to me some of her many wonderful qualities have been sprinkled your way Jane.
Thinking of you during this sad time and wishing you comfort through the fond memories you must have of Francess.
Affectionately,
Martha King
