Obituary of Sarah Margaret Greaves

SARAH MARGARET GREAVES

Peacefully at Toronto on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 in her 92nd year surrounded by family.  Beloved wife of Edward Percy Dorrien Greaves.  Much loved mother of Elizabeth Hoxsie (Paul) and Douglas Greaves (Sandra).  Proud grandmother of Sarah, Carolyn, Laura, Tamara and Ian, and ten great-grandchildren.  The family wish to thank the staff of Revera Retirement Living (Leaside) for their care and kindness.

Born in Bridgetown, Barbados January 16, 1926 the daughter of Stewart Massiah and Hilda Branch. Margaret lived at Springhead Plantation, Barbados for 16 years then moved to the island of Antigua where she met the love of her life Dorrien Greaves.  They married in 1946 and then moved to the Island of Montserrat where Dorrien was Chief of Police.  Following the birth of daughter Elizabeth and son Douglas, the family transferred to the island of Jamaica in 1949 where Dorrien was Deputy Commissioner of Police until 1966.

Following Dorrien's retirement in 1966, Margaret and Dorrien moved to Barbados until 1976 when the couple then moved to Canada to be near their son Douglas, who had emigrated to Canada in 1968 and lived in Toronto with his family, as well as daughter Elizabeth who lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan with her husband.  They first lived in Port Hope until 1986 when they moved to Toronto so Dorrien could receive better health care and Margaret could be closer to her beloved granddaughters.

Margaret was a school teacher in Antigua and Jamaica.  An avid tennis player, she also enjoyed ballet, swimming, gardening, poetry, classical music, theatre, reading and cooking.  Margaret also had a passion for travel, particularly London and the United Kingdom, where she enjoyed attending concerts and visiting museums.  Fiercely independent, Margaret was determined and resilient in the face of any adversity.

A funeral service will be held at 1 o’clock on Wednesday, August 9th in ROSEDALE UNITED CHURCH, 159 Roxborough Drive.  A reception will follow.  Interment Mount Pleasant Cemetery.  If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Canadian Cancer Society, 55 St Clair Avenue West Suite #300, Toronto, ON M4V 2Y7.  Condolences, photographs and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymilesnewbigging.com.
