Obituary of Thomas Edward McNulty

Born in Nokomis, Saskatchewan, February 4, 1929
Died peacefully in Collingwood, Ontario, July 14, 2017

Tom leaves behind his loving and devoted wife of 59 years, Mary Jo; his 6 children and their partners: Kathleen (John), Tom (Di), Mary (Josef), Shelagh (Michael), Paul (Joulie) and Loo (Matthew); and his
17 grandchildren: Annie, Ben, Mac, Emily, Tommy, Josef, Lucas, Max, Sarah, Henry, Wiley, Franny, Micaela, Keelian, Callachan, Hugo and Graeme. He also leaves members of the Flood, Peirce, Merrifield, Williams and McCabe families.

Tom lived for many years with Alzheimer’s disease, but truly never suffered. His calm, caring and playful demeanour that characterized his first 80 years continued as his memory declined. During the last five years in Collingwood, three of which were spent in long term care at Sunset Manor, Tom received outstanding care from many superb professionals, with special mention going to all the staff on Collingwood-2 and his caregivers Gertrude King, Laura LaChapelle, Sheila Pagnello, Pam McLellan, and Josie MacLachlan.

Tom grew up in London, Ontario with his parents Thomas and Gertrude, along with his three siblings Margaret, Eileen and Patrick. He attended De La Salle High School, followed by the University of Western Ontario, where he received his HBA from Ivey and played on the twice-champion Mustangs football team. Upon graduation from Western, Tom joined IBM as a sales trainee and began a fulfilling career with IBM that spanned more than 40 years, and included a variety of senior executive roles. While working, Tom was a committed volunteer in the Catholic Church, having served for many years as a board member and president of the board of Catholic Charities, and also as the founding president of
Mary Centre.

Family was everything to Tom and Mary Jo. Their mutual love and respect serve as a model almost impossible to replicate. While raising 6 children in Toronto, their home was always busy, noisy and full of fun. Memorable family vacations included the many summer visits to Lake Nipissing and Cape Cod. After retirement, much time was spent at the “farm” in the Mulmur hills, enjoying the company of their growing family, riding the tractor and harvesting vegetables.

A man of integrity, Tom was known by even the casual acquaintance as kind and thoughtful, with a great sense of fun.
