I was so sad to hear the news about Hugh, and I send my love and warm thoughts to Mrs. Barr, Margie and Jennifer.
My memories of Hugh are all from the "Thornhill days" - a magical time in the '60s where a group of kids in a small community grew up together - just being kids, having fun, sharing adventures and and forming lifelong connections and friendships in the process.
I got to know Hugh through my older brother who was Hugh's age and Hugh's sister Jennifer, who was my age. Our brothers always shooed us away when we wanted to see what they were up to, but Hugh was always kind and generous to me - and that's what I'll remember most.
Hugh was a good guy with a big heart and a gentle soul. I'm so grateful our paths crossed in those wonderful Thornhill days.

Our sincere condolences to Marg, Jennifer and especially Connie on Hugh's Passing from the Benson clan.
We had all been together this week, and we were reminiscing about our summers at Lake Joseph. We all got very excited when we knew we were heading to your cottage. Thom and Hugh chummy around quite a bit then...trying to get away from the giggly girls and the demands of the little ones. Any chance they could get, they were off in a boat.
During the last 6 yrs, I have enjoyed sharing stories with Connie over tea at the Belmont House. She always had an update about Hugh's life in Nestleton Station.
Thom nor I can be there but our thoughts are with you as tomorrow unfolds. It won't be easy.
A warm hug to you all. Ox

When I was a child, a little cousin that he hardly knew, Hugh let me watch while he drew wonderfully detailed and realistic pictures of battleships, cars and planes. I felt privileged and was so impressed. Later of course, he went on to acquire many more creative skills. In these recent years, I also appreciated what a good friend he was to my brother San. I'll always remember Hugh fondly: quiet, gentle and kind.

I was very sad to hear of Hugh's passing. I knew and chummed around with Hugh from early grade school through high school. I moved away from Thornhill in the early seventies and lost touch with the old gang but I remember Hugh as one of the best of us. Hugh was always very kind and thoughtful towards others. Hugh was a very special person and he came from a very special family.
My sincerest condolences and prayers to Mrs. Barr (she will always be Mrs. Barr to me) Margaret, Jennifer and their families.
I live in Vancouver which makes it difficult to be there with you on Friday but I will be there in spirit, celebrating the life of a truly good man.

Dear Mrs. Barr, Margaret, and Jennifer,
I would like to express my condolences regarding Hugh's sudden turn of events. It was so unexpected and I found myself quite shocked and deeply saddened.
Having known Hugh from childhood, and having maintained our friendship to this day, his death came as quite a jolt, honestly. At least annually, if not some years more often, "The Thornhill Gang" would always get together when I (and often with my family) would return east to visit. Ross Worthylake would host a BBQ, or we'd congregate at my family cottage in Bobcaygeon, or David Andrew would organize an event that we'd all make an effort to attend. And now, Hugh won't be able to partake any more. It's just so sad!
Regrettably, I will not be able to attend Hugh's celebration of life ceremony at the Thornhill Golf and Country Club (to be held on my mother's birthday, coincidentally). But what a perfect venue. I'll definitely be thinking of Hugh and the Barr family on that day. My very sincerest regards during this most difficult time.
Love,
Dave Morgan and Family

Dear Connie, Margaret, Jennifer and families and Valerie,
We were deeply saddened to hear of Hugh's unexpected death this past week. So young. Many happy memories around "the old hood" (i.e. Ball and Uplands in Thornhill). May the love and memories you hold in your heart always sustain you and bring you comfort. Caring about your sorrow and remembering you in prayer.
With deepest sympathy and love,
Clare, Bob, Bill and Sharon

Can't recall a memory of Friday nights/weekends during the `70`s (as a good friend of Hugh's little sister, Jennifer), without remembering all the hours I spent in the company of Hugh, Dave A, Bill and Bob M, Mike S, Peter T, Ross W and Paul B (et al!) in the basement of the Barr home at 30 Riverside... it was SO long ago - when we were significantly more innocent and Thornhill was much smaller... such fun (yet fading) memories of music and good times... skinny Hugh always was such a great host!
My heart goes out to Connie, Jennifer and Margie...
With love,
Cathy (Pearson)

I was saddened to hear of Hugh's passing. He was such a lovely man and it was such a joy to see him whenever the "kids of Uplands" gathered. He was an uplifting spirit and we are a little better for knowing him.
