Ron was a special friend to me when we were board members at the TSO. I introduced Ron to Muki Baum and the Ontario Mental Health Association where he quickly became a board member. He was a special force and was important to both organizations. On a personal level, he was a special friend. I will miss guessing who he will bring to the next concert.
For Bill, he was a worthy opponent on the golf course.
We are sorry that we we were away at his passing and offer heart felt sympathy to his family

Erin (and all other loved ones of Ron), I remember him well through the stories and visits with Jane (my God Mum). What an impressive life he led. I wanted you to know how I learned he died: I asked why Bank of Montreal had its flags at half mast. For your Dad/Husband/Grandpa/Brother/Uncle. I think he would have appreciated that. I'm so sorry for your incredible loss and am thinking of him, Aunt Jane, Jane S. and Jonathan. I hope they are having a big reunion. Tory Wilson and family xo

Dear Mrs. Atkey:
I'm sorry to learn that Mr. Atkey has passed away.
I had the chance to meet him at a Vietnamese social event on September 4, 2016.
At that time, he seemed to be in good health, good spirit.
The Vietnamese community in Canada is forever grateful for his role in the resettlement of 62,000 Vietnamese refugees following the fall of South to the Communists in 1975. His compassion and generosity were instrumental in the successful resettlement of these refugees.
As a member of the Board of Directors of Project 4000 from 1979 until 1983, I had the privilege of working with officials in Employment and Immigration Canada who, under Mr. Atkey's leadership, have facilitated Canada's acceptance of thousands of Vietnamese refugees, mostly the "boat people", during this period.
May he rest in peace.

On behalf of The Vietnamese Canadian Federation, The Vietnamese Association, Toronto, and the 300,000 Vietnamese Canadians across Canada, we would like to convey our condolences to the family of the former Minister and our gratitude in remembrance of the late Honourable Ronald Atkey.
During his tenure in Prime Minister Joe Clark's government, Minister Atkey and Minister Flora MacDonald were instrumental in the decision to grant 60,000 Vietnamese boat people asylum in Canada in 1979. This Canadian initiative, to resolve the Vietnamese refugee crisis by combining government with private sponsorship, was unprecedented and remained unequalled before or since in the world.
As a result of the above humanitarian Operation Lifeline, the Vietnamese Canadian communities across Canada have solidified and matured into vibrant, dynamic and productive forces currently enriching the multicultural fabric of Canadian societies. The communities are firmly rooted in their refugee history and are symbolized by the Vietnamese Heritage and Freedom Flag. This Golden Flag with 3 Red Stripes is the historical flag of ALL of Vietnam, and remains the beacon of light for Democracy and Human Rights that fuels the Vietnamese communities across Canada and the World.

Please accept my heartfelt condolences as to this most untimely passing.
Ron and I shared many a conversation on matters legal and non legal and of course numerous conversations animated on matters public political.
Sadly, our last conversation we shared in person was on May 1/17 where Ron and I discussed the upcoming Conservative Leadership competition.
Ron exemplified the ethos positive prescriptive in public service as my Member of Parliament where he represented integrity along with extreme competence.
Ron in his character and conduct was fundamentally a most decent person which is one quality in character rare.
I will miss Ron.
And to his family, please take pride in that Ron Atkey advanced our Canadian public social civic civil conversation in a manner decent and without malice.

Dear Atkey Family:
Ron was my Minister during the Indochinese movement in 1979 and 1980.In the fall of 1979 as the program got underway the the people of task force that has been set up to manage the movement were working very hard and putting in very long hours. We were all amazed when the entire team from the assistant deputy minister to the clerks and sectaries were invited to join him for lunch at the Parliamentary restaurant. For most of us it was the only time in our careers that a minister reached out to show his appreciation in such a way, something we always remembered. His calm courage when things went wrong, clarity of purpose and many kindness taught us a great deal about what it takes to be an effective leader.
He was kind enough to write the introduction to our new book - Running on Empty- Canada and the Indochinese Refugee Movement and I know he received his copies of the book a few days before he passed away. The vibrant Indochinese community of Canada is a living monument to Ron's compassion and courage..

Ron was one of the finest people I ever had the good fortune to befriend. We first met through our shared connection with Western, but I learned that our mutual interests went much deeper - to politics, history, national security and legal education. He was extraordinarily generous with both his time and his wisdom, and I always felt richer after a conversation with him.
Blessedly, I saw Ron the week before last. We had tea at the Albany Club - the place he loved so much. That afternoon will always remain a precious memory for me.

Ron has been a friend since our time together at the University of Western Ontario in the 60's. We were both involved in politics and faced each other across the aisle in Western's Model Parliament. Ron liked to joke about the fact that we had the same girl friend....though at different times! In more recent years, we shared a passion for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and have both been active on its Board and in other capacities. My wife and I often met Ron in the lounge at Roy Thomson Hall during TSO concerts, and always enjoyed our chats.
Ron made very important contributions to Canada -- as an MP and Cabinet Minister, through his leadership in providing haven for the Vietnamese boat people and his inaugural chairmanship of the Security and Intelligence Review Committee, and in many other ways. He was a good friend and we are saddened and shocked by his sudden death.
Menna and I send our sincere condolences to Marie and the family.

Ron was a partner of mine at Osler. We had corner offices beside each other and became good friends discussing politics, the arts, the law, and of course office gossip. Ron pursued a legal career which took him down paths not common at the time. His interest and expertise in government affairs, entertainment law and security matters added a great deal to the growth of Osler's law practice in industry specialty areas and allowed him to mentor a number of students and younger lawyers who developed career paths in these areas. Ron had an open door policy and was always ready to offer guidance and advice to anyone who asked. He brought vision, enthusiasm and pride every day to his work and was a wonderful colleague. His political achievement in opening Canada's immigration policy to Viet Nam refugees has added greatly to the country's diversity over the years and one for which the country will always be grateful.
