Obituary of Bernard W. Campin

BERNARD W. CAMPIN October 25, 1927-April 12, 2017 Peacefully in his sleep at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Bernie passed away in his 90th year. Loving father of Pennie (Eric Mathers) and proud granddad of Colin and Pamela, Bernie will also be greatly missed by his ex-wife and good friend, June Rynard. Born in Highgate North London, UK, the only son of Christopher and Florence Campin. At an early age, Bernie decided on a career as a newspaper reporter. He found a job as a copy clerk with the London Daily Mail and subsequently became a trainee reporter with the weekly Hampstead & Highgate Express. A two-year posting to Hong Kong as a reporter for the daily South China Morning Post soon followed. Upon returning to London, wanderlust set in and Bernie volunteered to be a Police Inspector in Kenya during the Mao-Mao Rebellion, where June joined him, and they were married in the Nairobi Cathedral. All the while, Bernie continued to write articles for English dailies. Immigrating to Canada in 1957, Bernie joined the Globe and Mail as editor of TV topics. In 1961, he moved to the CBC, helping to launch “The World at Eight” and “The World at Six,” eventually becoming Executive Producer of the CBLT-TV Evening News prior to ending his career as Manager of Planning for the CBC Radio Network and retiring in 1987. The family wishes to thank the staff and friends of the Claremont Retirement Residence and the Nephrology Department at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre for the support and care during the last few months of his life.
