I was so saddened to hear of Arden's passing. I was 20 years his junior at Imperial Oil but he was my mentor throughout my career. He was always the model of executive for all of us - considerate, compassionate, firm but fair. I will remember his sense of humour and how he always laughed at his own stories - which made it infectious.
My wife Jan and I visited Arden last winter in Sarasota and I'm so glad we did. He had just had his hip replaced and was in good spirits. That's how I will remember him.

To the Haynes family:
I and our family, especially Dad, extend our respect and regrets to you all regarding Arden's passing. Our families shared enjoyable times together while your Dad was stationed in the Lakehead. Furthermore, our mothers were both named Bev and that was another special connection.
Personally, I will always appreciate deeply, the professional courtesy your Dad extended to me early in my own career, when he had me to his office on St. Clair West, so I could make a presentation for the company's assessment. He made me feel both comfortable and considered. That meant a great deal to a young businessman. I last spoke with your Dad and your Mom in the late '80s when Arden was making a speech in Thunder Bay but had always hoped another opportunity would occur.
He will be missed by many.

Dearest Brother Arden,
Les and I will always have wonderful cherished memories of the times we had with you, Bev and family. The humor was memorable, the conversations intriguing, the sight-seeing excursions and golf games so enjoyable. Your strong love of family, extra-ordinary sense of humor and wit, generosity and guidance were qualities that made you "Special" to all.
You were always there for me, dear brother, with your keen counsel and support which were truly inspirational.
Your many successes and accomplishments were framed by your humility, caring, dedication, integrity and influential qualities that you possessed.
You will always be in our hearts and lovingly remembered.

My condolences to Richard, Carol, and the rest of the Haynes family on the loss of their papa!
As the Irish lament goes:
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

My sympathies to the family of Arden Haynes who was an extraordinary person in so many ways.
I knew him first when he chaired the Governor-General's Study Conference when I was the program chair of that round. I had never met such a focused chair who managed to get through the business in such a genial way. He led that Conference with great aplomb.
Then, among his many other contributions to the community, he served as Chancellor of York University and was the Chancellor who installed me as president in 1997. There his contributions to the University were extraordinary including to the students and the entire community.
These were only two of his many involvements and service to the people of Canada and to our communities. He was a fine person who led a distinguished life.
