I am saddened to only hear of Andy's passing today. I will always remember Andy as a kind man, a man that encourages my son Timo to play fun tennis. That is so special and how I wish there had been many more days like that. Thank you for showing us all how wonderful life is Andy. You are an incredible man.

Because we were out of town, we did not hear of Andres's passing until now. Reading the comments here it's clear he made a positive impact on so many. You couldn't ignore Andres at whatever stage of life, in my case when we were counselors at Joekaaru summer camp together. You always knew when Andres was in the room - he literally gave off sparks of wit, philosophy and let's face it, sometimes injected controversy just to see what you would do with it. I think I came close to winning some arguments with the incipient lawyer because he pronounced that I "argued like a man".
Then there were only glimpses of him here and there over the ensuing decades but there was one final chance conversation at Sunnybrook Hospital a few weeks ago. He was on his way to Druxy's to get a hamburger and Coke because he said the hospital food was inedible. He mentioned a soothsayer who had told him he would live to be 100. How sad that the bon vivant didn't make it to that age. The world is a poorer place without him in it for even peripheral acquaintances like us so we can only imagine the loss for family and close friends. Our condolences on the passing of your comet that blazed so brightly for too short a time.

Andres ... I always remembered the numerous stimulating, humour filled, brilliant and totally absurd conversations we had in the hallways of 2368 Queen St E or at the Waterworks or at the Goof or at Old Woodbine on every topic known to mankind and more. And then about 45 years later you told me you were kinda sick ... but you said screw it ...
You enriched my life with your attitude ... be in a good place ...

I will miss Andy's friendship, his wit, and his passion for tennis and all sports. I will miss his humour and long complex sentences. I will miss his elaborate theories on realpolitik that somehow integrated everything, including some sort of a planet x, in a masterful unified field theory - the mother of all conspiracy theories. I will, however, not miss the extreme tennis - those ventures into the frigid winter air, with frozen balls - just to demonstrate that this could be done. But in reality, I will miss that as well.

Having known Andres since he was ten we considered him a close friend and were privileged to know him a long, wonderful time.
Andy was also my fraternity brother and lawyer, dispensing thoughtful advice and opinions on a variety of topics. Our meetings in his office always strayed from legal matters to questions of philosophy, religion, the markets, politics and sports(Argos).
He had a terrific sense of humour and a quick, witty rejoinder to all issues.
It's only three weeks since he talked positively about getting back into shape, and now shockingly he's gone. Gone, but not forgotten. We will miss Andres but treasure our memories of him.
Our sincere condolences to Toomas and Suit and your families.

Andres will be sorely missed by me, Matti Nurklik. When I moved to Toronto in 1992 he took me under his wing and helped me through a difficult time as I had recently lost my father. We spent time going to the track, bike rides, eating out
and he even saw a swim-meet or two of mine at U of T. What he gave me was a genuine friendship and I tried to reciprocate in my limited way.
Whenever I came back for a visit, the last time August of 2016, Andres always found a day or two in his busy life to fit me in and make me feel like I had family with him. I will never forget his keen intellect, his wise words on any and all of subjects and our close friendship. He was always very generous with me.
Despite the distances, I feel I have lost an important figure in my life, someone who I now realise is irreplaceable and coming to Toronto will never be the same again. I will miss our swims in the lake, the trips to the track and just general catching up. He inspired me in many ways and I hope to keep that inspiration with me for as long as I live.
I already miss you a lot Andres. My condolences to the family, especially Tiu and Tomas who I knew.

Andy introduced us back in 2007 to see if we were compatible--and he was right. We married in 2011. If it hadn't been for Andy, we would never have met.
We loved his sense of humour and his spoken stream of thought, which contained great observations and insights. He seemed to flow from one topic to the next, all the connections making perfect sense to him but needing close attention from the listener --us--to "get" the connections. We will greatly miss him.

On behalf of our family in Calgary, I would like to express my sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Andy. Yogi ( as I always knew him) and I first met in the early 60’s at the Estonian Children’s camp. We really became much closer as we took part in the yearly Cuba excursions where we always seemed to enjoy a special friendship that revolved around tennis, euchre, reminiscing, and sharing. He rekindled an interest in tennis for Diane and I and helped us develop a special feeling for the Sierra Mar community in Cuba. He always took a special interest in my father, Aksel, as well as my brother Andi. He was always there with advice when needed and, of course, opinions when they were sometimes needed. He reveled in his role as spokesman at the resort dinners (and organizing tennis matches). The world’s “greatest” tennis matches and euchre games often took place under his watch as he would quite often tell you. We shall miss his humour, passion, dedication and Estonian pride. He was one of a kind.

Andy liked to claim he was a "shallow tennis friend," but he was anything but shallow. I was a single mum raising three boys alone and he was there, as a true friend. He showed up for everything - plays, recitals, track meets, Christmas Eve dinner at Papillon, lunches with my old Aunt Shirley. He even went to the hospital to visit her when she only had a few days left, and recited In Flanders Fields beautifully for her, a move that was classy and thoughtful and meant the world to her. He showed up at our door with boxes of treats for the boys. He showed up every Saturday morning to take me to St Lawrence Market, followed by lunch, which he always graciously insisted on buying. He made it so much easier to be in Toronto. Not just easier - he made it fun. He insisted on enjoying life, and you didn't really get to do anything but that when you were around him, whether it was by having lively debates with him (lots of those) or going for epic swims or getting chips at Cherry Beach chip truck, or striking up conversations with complete strangers in restaurants. When Andy was around, there was just no choice but to embrace life and love it and squeeze the hell out of it so you get every drop. He didn't care about the boundaries that stop so many people from doing that. That was his most awesome gift. That was the gift I'm going to keep forever. I'm going to remind myself that Andy's watching and saying "So anyway....the government (or banks or the Fed) doesn't want you to have fun because happy people can't be controlled and that ruins the world order, so we should probably do something fun."
Thanks Andy. I'm sadder than sad here in France, and if I could be in Toronto for your memorial I would be. But I played tennis yesterday, and I played it for you. And somehow that helped a little bit.

Very sad news but it's been wonderful reading the life and times of Andy. Truly a man who knew how to live life to the fullest. I knew Andy the hockey player - playing shinny with him several times a week at Kew Beach over many years. To say he was a character would be putting it mildly. Someone who craved the competition only hockey could bring out, but, at the same time, always keeping things fun with his wry sense of humour and an ability to make everyone laugh at the crazy situations that would happen on ice, And not just during the game. Before and after games, he would often hold court in the dressing room. He had the rarest of gifts-an ability to relate to almost anyone, regardless of age or station in life.
Everyone knew he was a lawyer, but most never knew which law he practiced. He just lived in the moment while at the rink. There was nowhere else he wanted to be right then. Just playing hockey, scoring goals, passing the puck, and checking. And laughing that big laugh while adding his witty and funny observations about the game we played.
I'm certain that Andy is frantically getting in his last few shinny games in heaven before they close the rink for another season. Your shinny friends miss you Andy. Heartfelt condolences to Olvet family.
