I have known Don Gilchrist while on posting at the Canadian Embassy in the early 80’s.
I remember him as a friendly “giant” who was down to earth competent, good humoured and definitely passionate when it came to skating and jazz! We would know when he was coming close to our office as his Honda Prelude would vibrate with Jazz bands music.
He was well respected in the Dutch business community at large.
I am sorry for his passing and offer my sincere sympathies to Christiane and the family.

As former competitive figure skaters at the national and international levels, we came into contact with Donald on numerous occasions, as well as during my tenure on the Skate Canada Board. We could see and did experience Donald's commitment to the sport in his builder capacity, as he was a true gentleman and a quiet, unassuming encourager to the skaters and those who had the privilege of working with him in his volunteer capacity. What a great contribution to figure skating in Canada and the World, as well as leaving a fine legacy!

So sorry to hear of the passing of such a true Canadian gentleman. He will be missed for all of his contributions to the sport of figure skating. Also to those of us whom he helped on personal issues. He was a great man and one of a kind. I'm so very sorry.

Christiane, Nag, Donny and Jean:
From the Blackwood's, spread from Salt Spring Island to Winnipeg, we send condolences on the loss of a unique husband and father. I will never forget the kindness of Don Sr and Christiane letting me live with them while training in LA.
Possessor of the most wicked dropshot known to mankind, usually followed by the most wicked laugh, Don cut quite a figure on a tennis court, and in life. I know he will be very missed by all of you, and the only solution is to keep on playing his favourite jazz music, loud and clear.
Our thoughts are with your family

My sincere condoleances to Christiane and the whole family. I keep very good memories of my long friendship and cooperation with Donald during the many years we worked together as ISU Office Holders. Donald was a real gentleman and I am really sad for his loss. May he rest in piece.

Donald (aka Mr. Gilchrist) was one of the biggest influences in my skating life. I was lucky enough to be on the judging panel at the Halifax Canadian Championships when Brian Orser landed the first triple Axel in competition. Never one to hide his enthusiasm for the best of the best, Donald (referee of the event) pounded his fist on the table and leapt up in glee and appreciation. I served as a committee member when Donald chaired Skate Canada's officials committee. He sought to encourage all judges to excel and to be their best -- something that he embodied. As a referee (a most powerful position on an event) Donald created an environment for judges to evaluate fairly and courageously according to the skaters performance. He never lost his faith in judges, his appreciation of skaters performing their best for us, and a belief in the positive effect that skating could have on sport as a whole. As Ann Shaw has said, "he was a giant" in the world of figure skating and will be missed forever.
