Obituary of Helga Borchert

HELGA BORCHERT February 20, 1937 - March 8, 2017 Helga Borchert passed away peacefully in the palliative care unit at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in the loving arms of her devoted son Roland and daughter-in-law Kimberley, surrounded by love and kisses. Predeceased by her adoring husband Heinz of 40 years, they are now eternally united. Helga was the cherished Oma to Tyler and Monika and is survived by loving sisters Ruth Lehmann (Toronto) and Gerda Karg (Germany). Helga leaves behind many nieces, nephews, friends and extended family in the GTA, Germany, Western Canada and the south shore of Rice Lake. Helga, Heinz and young Roland arrived in Canada in 1964 from Germany with little more than $50 and a few household belongings. Helga and Heinz embraced their new life, and for 3 three decades were known as the "super" supers at a building in Leaside. Their "little cabin" on Rice Lake brought them much joy and happy memories with family and friends. Helga worked as a cashier and bookkeeper at Dominion in Leaside for many years, gaining numerous lifelong friends of coworkers and customers. An outstanding baker ("inside/outside pants"), amazing cook (rouladen and spaetzle), dancer extraordinaire, devotee of British comedies, and a die-hard Leafs fan, Helga will be remembered for her positive attitude and upbeat personality. The family wishes to thank the staff and doctors at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and the palliative care team at K-Wing Central for their compassion and support. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES – NEWBIGGING CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 17th. A service will be held in the chapel on Saturday, March 18th at 3:00 p.m. If desired, donations in Helga's name may be made to K Wing, Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, 2075 Bayview Avenue, Toronto M4N 3M5.
