In the late 1960s I took two courses in Greek History with Joan Bigwood at Victoria College. She was outstanding -- knowledgeable, thoughtful, and sensitive in her reading of the text; open to suggestions and discussion; witty and wry of speech; approachable and helpful as a human being. In the modern department which seems to set more importance on the writing of books than on teaching Joan stands out.
I know I speak for all of her students, when I say that we'll always remember her with esteem, gratitude, and affection.
