Obituary of John (Jack) Banks Clements

<p><strong>JOHN (JACK) BANKS CLEMENTS, Q.C.</strong></p> <p><strong>&nbsp;</strong></p> <p>Jack passed away peacefully at home on the 15'<sup>h</sup> day of February at the age of 92 years. &nbsp;He was born in Winnipeg, the son of Garfield and Fodie (McKinnon) Clements.&nbsp; He leaves his beloved wife of 58 years, Mary Louise (Edmonds), his children, of whom he was always so proud, daughter Anne and son John (Joanne), and his adored grandchildren, Jonathan, Sarah and James Clements. &nbsp;Jack is also survived by his sister Bernice McLean (the late Donald), and his sister-in-law Ellen Edmonds (the late George), all of Toronto, as well as nephews and cousins.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>In his infancy, Jack moved with his family to Pasadena, California, where he received most of his early education. &nbsp;On returning to Canada, he attended the University of Manitoba where he received a BA degree followed by Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto where he graduated with honours. &nbsp;He then joined the Toronto law firm of Lash &amp; Lash, which through mergers became part of Lang Michener LLP from which he retired in 1995 as a Senior Partner in the Toronto office of the firm.&nbsp; He was appointed a Queen's Counsel in 1965.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>While active in practice Jack served on the board of directors of a number of both public and private corporations as well as being involved in community organizations. &nbsp;For many years he was a member of the Board of Directors and fundraiser for the Ontario Division of The Canadian National Institute for the Blind and upon his retirement from the Board was made an honorary member of the Institute. &nbsp;He also served as a member of many Campaign Committees of the United Way of Metropolitan Toronto and for a time was Chairman of its Agency Board Canvas Committee. &nbsp;Jack was also for many years an Elder of Timothy Eaton Memorial Church.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Jack loved tennis, gardening, playing the piano, reading and watching the Toronto Blue Jays. &nbsp;He always cherished the memory of the trips he and Mary Louise had taken over the years to many parts of the world as well as their winter vacations in Florida.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>He will be greatly missed by his family and friends for his kindness and his quiet sense of humour.&nbsp; The family wants to thank the many caregivers who made his final months so comfortable.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>A funeral service will be held in the chapel at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W.
