Obituary of Albertine "Timmy" Vezina

ALBERTINE (TIMMY) HERBERT FLEMING VEZINA

Passed away in her 91st year at Belmont House, Toronto on Tuesday December 20, 2016. Albertine (Timmy) is survived by her children Camilla Vezina, Dr. Paul Vezina & Louise Vezina; her nephew Bruce Herbert; her grandchildren Grant Vezina, Peter Bigauskas, & David Bigauskas and her sister Amy Brearley. Dearly remembered by many nieces and nephews.

Timmy was born on December 14, 1926, the second youngest of eight children, in Haileybury, Ontario (Temiskaming Shores) and was very proud of her birthplace. Her large Herbert family had an entrepreneurial history from the late 1800s and survived many hardships of the North, including the Haileybury Fire of 1922. Her father, A. Lorne Herbert, was a member of Who’s Who in Commerce and Industry in Canada. Her brother, A. Robert Herbert, was an MPP & is listed in Who’s Who in Canada. She met both her future husbands growing up in Haileybury where she attended Haileybury High School & then the Commercial School in New Liskeard. She worked as a farmerette in Quebec during WWII, as an assistant to the court at Haileybury Court House & later managed her father’s Herbert Fuels Company in Haileybury.

Timmy married her first husband, George Camille Vezina in 1946, had her three children and moved to Montreal in 1966 after George’s brief work transfer for two years to Saint John, New Brunswick. She had a passion for antiques and in 1977 she acquired a twenty-room mansion in Westmount, which she filled with her antique collections. Realizing the wealth of business opportunities in the real estate market, she attained her license in 1977 & joined Royal Trust in Montreal. George died of cancer in 1980 at age 53, prompting Albertine’s move to Toronto. She joined Royal Trust in Toronto, acquired three Shi Tzus and bought a house in Rosedale opposite Chorley Park where she walked her dogs. In 1989 she married her childhood sweetheart, Richard James Fleming, of Haileybury. They spent 16 wonderful years together travelling between their three houses, enjoying summers on Lake Simcoe and winters on Marco Island, Florida.

Albertine will be remembered as a Herbert who followed in her family’s footsteps holding her strong principles and values throughout her life. She loved her extended family and we will all miss her spark for hard work, having large parties, her clever conversation and humour. She always took the time to enjoy life, her dogs, the company of family, neighbours and friends. A celebration of her life will be held in Haileybury at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Condolences, photographs and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymilesnewbigging.com.
