Aunt Mary’s Shoes
They were square-toed leather walking shoes
The sort that one would wear
To trot a block or walk a mile
In foul weather or fair.
In the closet they stood ready
In certain expectation
Of swift excursions always marked
By brisk determination.
They always seemed to hurry
In purpose-driven haste
To “fill the unforgiving minute”
With no seconds left to waste.
Nimble and resolute they sped
To the post box or the store
To run errands or bring comfort
To a grieving neighbour’s door.
So “like a little candle”
Burning steady, warm and bright
Their owner hastened to bring kindness
Wisdom, laughter, love and light.
Upon her standard, carried bravely
With generosity and grace
Her sturdy shoes have set a pattern
For all of us to trace.
Her indomitable spirit
Lives in precious memory still
But those intrepid little shoes
Will prove difficult to fill.

As I remember Aunt Mary, it is hard to think of a time when she did not instill a positive and loving approach to everyone around her. As a little girl, the time at Bruce Beach , shared with my cousins, and as I grew a little older some great golf with Aunt Mary,
and the Saturday evenings in Kincardine listening to the Pipe Band, are vivid memories.
Later, Aunt Mary loved to hear the stories about my work life, and often helped me to see through the challenges.
My Mother, Kate, often spoke of the strength of her sister Mary and I don't think there was ever a week when they didn't talk to each other.
The last few years I have been able to share special occasions with my cousins and their now extended families. Aunt Mary was so very proud of all of them and delighted with the new additions.
I spent this past Christmas with Aunt Mary and it will be a truly cherished memory.
My love and my prayers are sent out to my cousins and their families and all who knew Mary. She will be remembered..

Memories of my Great Aunt Mary from childhood visits to the house on Lawrence Avenue are of a practical, forthright, strong woman who knew what she wanted. Her love of stories, reading, and current events shone through in our discussions. In her later life I had the opportunity to visit a few times and the strong woman was still there, even with human frailties taking their toll.
Ken and I send prayers for all of the family, extended family and many friends who knew Mary. A long life lived with grace to celebrate for us, and wonderful memories to hopefully sustain us in this time of sorrow.

So sorry to hear about Mary. Mary, I think, was the last of her generation at Bruce Beach. A generation that played, laughed and developed an everlasting love for the The Beach and her fellow beachers. She exemplified a generation that exhibited grace and and strength of character. My deepest condolences. Unfortunately we will not be able to attend. John Kennedy St. Lucia
