To Lee, Stephen and Shelagh. I don't think you will remember me, but I lived next door to your family on Glencairn Avenue in Toronto. You guys were all little and I was about 15 when your mom and dad asked me to babysit. I remember to you Lee, with your beautiful long brown hair and smile. Shelagh....you had a gorgeous mass of brown curls and you were always laughing. And Stephen...you were sweet and polite. Your parents were very very kind to me, My mother had just died and I was living in our home with my Dad. I remember coming to babysit one night, and your mom invited me for supper. We all sat around the table on the floor, on cushions!!!! I thought your parents were so cool, and your mom had pretty red hair and wore beautiful, flowing caftans! You were really sweet kids. I don't remember when you moved but I followed your Dad's amazing work through the years and all the amazing accomplishments. One of my daughters volunteered at Tiff one year, and I have always been very proud to say I knew your dad and all of you. I am so sorry about your Dad's passing and I know how much you must miss him. Just wanted to let you know this, and let you know MY really happy memories of all of you. Take care.....Liz.

Brian Morey posted a condolence

Bill Marshall and his family were "neighbours" of the Morey family in the 1970s at our farm north of Fenelon Falls, Ont. Bill purchased the 1920s-era one-room Lamb's School that stood in a one-acre corner of one of our fields. My sister Shasta and I attended that school for about six months, until rural schools were amalgamated into local public schools in neighbouring towns.
Bill had the schoolhouse renovated and made into a kind of retreat, or cottage, I suppose. Our two families socialized a bit, and myself, Shasta and our brother Lawrence spent some time with Bill's two kids (at the time), Steve and Lee.
I also remember being very impressed with Bill's Corvette Stingray!
But the main occasion I remember was a summer afternoon, when my Dad and I were out in that large field, drawing in hay. Bill came out into the field, in jeans and tank top, and helped us bring in a load of hay! Afterwards, we sat in our living room, and Bill and my Dad chatted over a beer. It's been interesting to read the postings since Bill's passing about how curious he was, how he was always asking questions - that's what I remember about that conversation.
On behalf of the Morey family, I hope Bill's wife and children will accept our sincere condolences on their loss.

It was with great sadness to learn about your loss. I was very honoured to meet Bill and Henk in 2015 to pitch an idea about establishing a film festival in Trenton, Ontario. (Cinema on the Trent) I truly enjoyed his company, his story telling and his uncanny wit. I did not know him for very long but he made you feel like you had been life long friends. He will be missed. R.I.P. Bill

Bil certainly was a character....but a very generous one.
I first met at a conference about 15 years ago when we were on a panel discussing the congruence and conflict of film and the new evolving digital media. He, as per usual, was an advocate for the film industry and all the businesses and professionals in that industry who contribute to our communities. We hit it off and he invited me to his home to continue our discussion, and that is where I met the lady behind the man, the lovely Sari Ruda.
Sari and Bill became good friends with my wife Marsha and I and through them we met a great many interesting people, a number of whom who also became friends, I joined a number of their other projects such as Vortex, and we attended events that we had only read about. One was an opening gala for a film being launched at TIFF. The venue inside and out, but is was impressive to see the way the crowds parted for Bill and Sari and the number of people who came forward to say hello, and, to thank him.
Bill leaves a legacy for the City of Toronto that while renowned worldwide, is not appreciated by Torontonians for the contribution it makes every year. Yes we get the glamour and the celebrity, but we also earn tourist revenue that is greater than anyother conference, sporting event, or holiday.
And for Marsha and I, he has left us with experiences, and friendships that we otherwise would have never known.
Bill used to say when asked by some young filmaker want-to-be what they had to do to become a producer....you have to wait for one of us to die because its a very small market..... Well there is a seat available now, but one that will be impossible to fill.

I knew Bill when he attended Oshawa Central Collegiate. I knew his mother and father, both of whom worked at Simcoe Hall Settlement House in Oshawa with me. Bill was a bright student who was on the student council of the school. I was sorry to hear of his passing and know that many others is Oshawa who have followed his career will feel likewise.

To Sari & to Bill's family,
Thinking of you during this time of loss & grief, and hoping that all the wonderful memories of your great times with Bill will sustain you through the days ahead.
I worked with Bill on the Niagara Film Festival in 2015--I still giggle when thinking of my "interview", which involved having a pint at his local and swapping stories about the film industry. :)
Bill was a true original and we are all lucky to have been touched by his presence.
With warm regards,
Kate Yorga

So honored to have worked with Bill (and Sara) launching the Niagara Integrated Film Festival (Year 2) serving as Board Advisory Member. He had a command of an audience like no other and people of Niagara where in 'awe' of his vision, passion and commitment to the region. His legacy of building bridges of communications between different people and places in the world through film will never be surpassed. Thank you for making a difference in so many people's lives. RIP Bill.
