Dear family deVerber,
I was deeply saddened to hear about George's passing.
I have the fondest memories of meeting George through my esteemed mentor and dear friend Barrie many years ago, just after my arrival to this country. The support the deVeber family gave me in my first years in Canada will never be forgotten.
Please accept my sincerest condolences.
Yours truly,
Jan Schulz

To the deVeber Family:
George was my classmate (5T6 Medicine U. of T.), colleague and friend. He was one of many great doctors from that class.
George was my center-man for our Meds Inter-faculty Hockey team. As one key game was ending, George was taking the face-off at the circle to the left of the rival goaltender. George positioned me right behind him at the edge of the circle with the admonition “be ready”. He won the draw, the puck came right to my stick and I fired it into the net for the winning goal.
I recount this story to illustrate two great attributes of George:
1) his capacity to see the big picture and to think 'outside the box'.
2) his firm belief in the ‘team’ concept: “there is no ‘I’ in TEAM”.
At the Toronto Western Hospital, he saw deficiencies for his patients’ care, and he set up the dialysis team. That led to the kidney transplant program and the development of the anti-rejection drug management of the transplant recipients. That contributed to the success of the heart transplant program.
Personally, I will miss George's warm infectious smile behind the big horn-rimmed glasses.

The deVeber family
I got to know George when he became a member of The Mad River Golf Club. On my first encounter with him as a staff member it was evident of his kind and humorous manner. He had me laughing within minutes of our conversation. Over the years he took an interest in my health often asking me if i was well, and following up with heartfelt advice on any issues i had. As i read through his obituary i quickly realized his brilliance in providing exceptional health care for so many in this province. I recently had a call from George, and it was a conversation i will cherish.
Rest in peace my friend.

There are no words that can adequately express my sorrow for the family and friends left to grieve our dear George. My life will never be the same but my memories of all the years that I was blessed to have George a part of it, will live forever. I know he is at peace. May Scott, Hilary and his family and friends find peace as well. It is what our "great white father" would want.
xoxo
