I mailed a Christmas Card to Dr. Barnett today as I did for many years. I told my son Ayo how great a person and Neurologist Barney is. He Googled Barney and broke the news that Barney had passed on to Joyful
Activity.
When Ayo was 11 months old in 1974, Barney invited my family to his home in King City, ON. I was then a Neurology resident in London. It was a memorable weekend. We often recalled the times as I kept in touch.
Dr.Barnett's impact on my career and life is such that I am always overwhelmed with gratitude that providence led me to this great man.
He will be fondly remembered.

My husband and I (from Brisbane, Australia) were just sitting down and talking about Barney and decided to Google his age. We were so sad to see that he had passed away and so recently. Barney and Kay were so kind to us in 1999 when Robert did a neurology fellowship. We had two young children (the youngest 8 weeks old), we arrived in March and Barney was just so kind and yet inspirationally strong. He lent us a car, invited us to King for numerous weekends and we met very interesting people. What I remember very clearly, and think about often was his ability to stack a dishwasher! He could fit SO much in the dishwasher!! I also remember his birdwatching. I had never met anyone so fascinated by birds. Robert enjoyed mowing the lawn on his ride on mower. He was an amazing mentor for Drs interested in stroke. I felt very sad to hear of his passing but so happy to think of how much he achieved in his lifetime - a true legend.

I just learned of Barney's passing yesterday via the Robarts newsletter. I remember him as a true scholar and gentleman. He was a friend of my parents, John and Shirley Colthart (1942 UWO Med School Grads). I remember vividly when he showed the new electron microscope he had in London about 1966 to my Mom, a sister and me when we were passing through town.
My condolences to the family and all who were close to him.

I want to pass on my condolences on the passing of your dad. I remember well your beautiful spot next to ours in King and the times we spent there collecting tadpoles in the pond, swimming in the pool & a wonderful Easter egg hunt we once had in the snow. I've passed on the info to my dad who is suffering from dementia & Alzheimer's.
Kind regards to you all

Dear Barnett and Drake Families,
I was hoping to be there, in person, this evening, to pay my respects and to give you my personal condolences and those of the members of The Department of Clinical Neurological Sciences at this time of loss for you and your families; however, I have a flu-like illness with cough, fever, chills and almost no voice, and so in the interest of everyone I remained in London.
This past Tuesday, at our weekly Grand Rounds we were celebrating Founders' Days--the day on which we annually pay tribute to Charlie and Barney--the Founders of our Department and as a show of respect for Barney's passing we observed a moment of silence at the beginning of the Grand Round. We are in the process of arranging a more formal memorial event to mark his passing but are wanting to co-ordinate this with Western so the date and time have yet to be determined.
Barney's passing marks the end of an era in many ways. That generation are slowly passing on (I lost my own mother in July) and they really were a formidable group who have left us all a wonderful legacy.
On behalf of The Department I want to express to you all our deepest sorrow for your loss and our profound thanks and gratitude for everything that Barney did and, through the Barnett Chair, will continue to do for The Department into the future. We wish you all the very best at this time of transition and in the days ahead. We shall hold you all in our thoughts and in our prayers.
Your father had a great love for the English poet Lord Alfred Tennyson. It was he who suggested that the last line of Tennyson's poem ULYSSES be inscribed on the corner stone of the Robarts Research Institute. It is perhaps fitting then, at his passing, to quote the last few lines of that poem:
"Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho'
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield."
And yet, in the end, yield we all must; however, the legacy lives on and a marvellous legacy it is--not only in you, his family, but in his wider neurological family and for that we can all be grateful now, and in the years to come.
Very warmest personal regards to you all, I look forward to expressing condolences in person at some future date.

Ann, William, Janey and Ian ... I am sad to hear about your father. He was a wonderful friend to my dad. They always got such a kick out of each other ... working on the rope tow to haul us kids up the hill in King, trading jabs about the merits/dangers of chewing gum, keeping a running score of the number of birds they saw on the numerous walks they took together and a million other jokes they shared. He was a darling man and my whole family loved him.

Dr. Barnett had a huge impact on my life and I will forever be grateful to him. I suspect that I am one of many who feel this way. In my case, he recruited me to the new Robarts Research Institute in 1986, offering me the most wonderfully supportive environment to further my research career. It gave me opportunities I never would have found in my previous position. It also brought me to Canada, a choice that I have never regretted for an instant. He was an effective, warm, inspiring leader who was esteemed by all. I have missed him since the day he retired from Robarts. He was directly or indirectly responsible for much of the joy in my life in the past 30 years.

To the Barnett Family,
I remember first meeting Dr. Barnett and Mrs. Barnett as a young boy visiting King Township with my Uncle Ron Tasker and Aunt Mary (Craig) Tasker. I remember how welcoming the Barnetts were and how they planted "seeds" along with my aunt and uncle on the tremendous value of the natural creation all around us on the Oak Ridges Moraine. We would hike trails and roam through fields filled with milkweed and countless other plants.
Years later when I moved to King Township I became briefly reacquainted with both Dr. Barnett and Mrs. Barnett and was warmly welcomed.
I'm grateful for the rich contribution of Dr. Barnett in medicine and in promoting excellent stewardship of the forests, wetlands and other natural features all around us.
May you all as a family find comfort in the wonderful memories of a life well-lived in your father, grandfather and great grandfather.
Sincerely, James Bruce Craig

Dr. Barnett was my first boss as I entered the work force out of college - about 25 years ago now. I worked for him in an office at Robarts as he travelled the world for speaking engagements, saw patients at UH and worked on the NASCET trial. What an incredible man who I remember very fondly. He often spoke of Kay, his children, grandchildren and time together in King City. I still have the Kids Cottage Book that he proudly gave me many moons ago - long before my 4 boys, who are now in their late teens, were even thought of.
Dr. Barnett never went far without his dictaphone in hand and he certainly made the transcriptions interesting as he interrupted himself to comment on what was happening around him, even talking through a fall off the back steps at Robarts or a trip to the restroom. His writing often challenged me as well - I remember turning the paper every which way but up, hoping it would help me determine what he had written.
My thoughts are with you all at this time as you celebrate an amazing life! Cheers to Dr. Barnett!

Walking through Toronto Airport this morning and overheard the news of Dr. Barnett's passing in a discussion between passengers. I'm glad I did as I want to say how vey much I appreciated his interest and support when I was a young public relations practitioner at University Hospital in London, Ontario. He and Charlie Drake were a formidable pair! The world will not see such leaders again.

On behalf of my mother, Sybil Hagerman, I would like to offer my condolences to the Barnett family. My mother's memory is fading, but when I told her of Dr. Barnett's death, she remembered him as a wonderful man and a gentleman in the true spirit of the word.
I remember my late father, Dr. Stan Hagerman, talking to and about Dr. Barnett years ago when he was practicing medicine in St. Thomas. My father shared a professional and personal relationship with Dr. Barnett and it was always with fondness and respect that he spoke of him. 'Henry' was a familiar name in our household!
Sincerely,
Kathy Hagerman

He was and always be "Barney". His legacy - millions of lives saved, the human condition improved, the world of research enriched. Dr. Barnett was a modest, innovative genius who championed research, challenged governments and business to fund medical research which he called an investment in lives. His love of medicine was obvious over a long life of accomplishments and his love and respect for nature part of his life, an obsession passed on to his extraordinary family.
The work of medicine and science has lost one of its most scintillating stars.

My most sincere condolences in Barney's passing. I have so, so many fond memories of working as his assistant at Robarts. I truly enjoyed not only his work ethic, but his abounding love for his family. I had the privilege of typing up the Prodigals of all his trips he took, often taking a grandchild or two with him and Kay. What memories they must have of these trips with their grandparents.
I spoke to Barney just a couple of months ago, he still working on what I assume was a continuation of his Memoirs. I am very glad to have had this opportunity, as I was always happy to know that he could still count on me for help. My time working with him was the best decision I ever made. I will truly miss him, but am forever blessed for knowing him.
Sincerely
Brenda Harrington

We met nearly eight years ago at his home on the edge of the Happy Valley Forest, a wilderness sanctuary that Barney cherished & helped to preserve, in cooperation with The Nature Conservancy of Canada. We shared a special moment that day as we bonded over my sighting of an Olive-sided Flycatcher in his forest. He was genuinely excited to make a rare addition to his yard list. Over the next years, we chatted about a lot more than nature, art & medicine, as Barney was a true visionary, scholar, humanitarian & historian. His socio-political consciousness extended to the biggest issues of our time, including those surrounding the world's uneven distribution of wealth. I've been enriched & inspired by knowing him. Crystal & I, along with our children, offer our warmest condolences to Ian, Judy & the entire family on your loss.
