I am so very sorry to hear of Dr. Shandling's passing. He did all of my surgeries back in the very early 90s at Sick Kids and I continue to be grateful every day for the wonderful life he gave back to me. I have checked in on how he's been doing often over the years. He made a very scared child feel calm, cared for and always made me laugh - especially when I went speeding past him in the hallways after my surgeries! My deepest condolences to his family and friends. He was family to me and I will always hold a special place in my heart for him.

To Mary, Susan, and Dr B Shandling's other family members.
I only met Susan, and Mary, at Sick Children's hospital, so I am writing to hope they will remember myself.
I have written a private message to you, but also wanted to light a candle in your husbands' memory!
I was truly shocked to hear of his having a long illness and of his passing, yet I know now that he is at peace with our God!
Dr Shandling looked after me for MANY MANY years, between the early 1970's and the 1980's. From a very early teenager to a mid 20. I stayed at Sick Kids that long, due to my unique liver disease illness.
Not many children survived liver disease, during those years, and I was very blessed to have Dr Shandling for helping, with Gods guidance, to keep me alive!
I had MANY surgeries at Sick Children's and spent many days, weeks, and months in the hospital!
If it wasn't for the skill, knowledge, kindness, tremendous skills of our dear friend, I know I wouldn't be here!
My family would call from Whitby, saying I was in an emergency situation and by the time I got to the emergency department at Sick Kids, he would be there waiting for us, with an ICU bed ready, day or night!
Because of his amazing skills and knowledge, and his ability to ADAPT materials and precious known surgeries, For children, he did a few "first surgeries" on myself!
And I survived my liver disease complications, until I received a liver transplant in 1992 (and a second one in 1996)!
In those years many children did not survive liver disease, and I'm being honest when I say, "the odds were not for me"!
Every time I had a major hemorrhage, I was at deaths door. (Not until I was in nursing school, did I understand the severity of my disease, as I learnt only approx 10-15% of children/adults died with one major hemorrhage, in those years. And I had so many major hemorraghes, --never mind smaller ones-- that all I could believe is God kept me alive to do His work)!
He performed many surgeries, that kept me alive, that are obsolete now.
I've heard that there is ONLY one surgeon, who even knows how to do them now, and he's in TGH!
As I read some of the previous condolences, I TRULY believe
That some of the anest. Worked with your Dad, to save my life!
Some of the surgeries, (in 1970's), I had were: splenorenal shunt with splenectomy, vena-caval shunt, Sugara procedure, that he adapted for children as he didn't want to do the porta-caval shunt on a young person, (I did get that surgery one year prior to my first liver transparent).
I did become an RN in 1984. Even though I've had months and years off work, due to long-term complications of being so "ill", as a young person, the long term side effects of all the medications, and the numerous treatments to keep me alive, ... I kept going back into my job, to help people, in TGH, just like your Dad, had to keep helping others!
I believe I am a bit like him, as I can't, and could not, give up my love of helping others, and being a RN, (Dr for him!)
Even being off almost 10 years, for both hips/both knees replacements, both ankles fused, and right shouder pin/plates, thyroid cancer, and other surgeries,.. I went back to College to upgrade my skills, .. and have been back to work , full time, as a RN, for just over 7 years now.
"Keep fighting, and hang on", .. I could hear those thoughts, going through your Dads' mind, as he worked so, SO, SO, hard, on getting me better!
So, it is my TRUE HONOUR, and BLESSING to light a candle in Barry Shandling's memory!
Rest in peace my dear precious Doctor!
You have fought the good fight, you have won the race, and you did great work helping others, PLUS you loved your family very much!
I KNOW they felt how much you loved them!
Thank you to the family, for sharing your husband, your Dad, with "us" patients! As God TRULEY used him, to help save, or even make, our lives better!
Rest in peace! Amen!

As a fellow graduate of the University of Cape Town I was delighted to be joined at Sick Kids by Barry Shandling and to work frequently as his anaesthetist. He was a very competent surgeon and was always challenging to work with .
We recently met Mary and were made aware of the deterioration of his health.
Our sincere sympathy to Mary, Susan Ian and Alexandra from the Sloan family.

Dr. Shandling was my daughters surgeon when he removed her gall bladder at the age of 11 over 23 years ago. We both remember how kind and interested he was in her and when we finished chatting before the surgery he handed her his business card and said. "Julie, you call me if you have any more questions". How wonderful to be treated like an adult with respect and consideration in such a scary time for a young girl.

Our condolences to the Shandling family. Dr Shandling saved our sons life when he was about 3 in 1992. He had an undiagnosed appendicitis that we spent a week at another Toronto hospital with no progress. Dr Shandling and his team figured things out, put a drain in as the appendix had burst then did the surgery to remove his appendix after he felt better. Our aim is 27 years old now and leading a very healthy and productive life. Thanks to your husband / father / brother. Ever grateful !!

Thirty-three years ago our son Christopher was born with Hirschsprung's Disease and Dr. Barry Shandling at Sick Kids was his surgeon. Over the next six months, Dr. Shandling performed four operations on Chris and, at one point, drove to the hospital in the middle of the night to check on him. We have never forgotten Dr. Shandling's concern for our son and his kindness to us.
Our sincere condolences to his family.

I was saddened to learn from my mentor, David Steward, of Barry's recent passing. I was the Chief of Anesthesia and worked for almost 20 years at the Hospital for Sick Children together with a terrific group of surgeons, none more passionate and skilled in his profession than Barry. In addition to his expertise as a general surgeon, Barry had a quick wit and sense of humor. We also shared a passion for bow ties. However, Barry did appreciate my serious nature during difficult cases in the operating room but always sought to interject some levity. I recall one day working alone with Barry when I had a somewhat difficult airway to intubate. After that was all sorted, I turned for a moment to pick up a syringe at which time I heard Barry shout out: Oh my, Lerman, what have you done? As i turned, I saw the end of a plastic tracheal tube (that is supposed to be in the child's airway) that appeared to be sticking out of the child's ear! I gasped, at which point Barry burst into laughter as he picked up the piece of tubing that he had gently laid against the child's outer ear and exclaimed: GOTCHA! I turned red when I recognized the hoax he had pulled on me. In addition to his quick sense of humor, Barry was the consummate surgeon, who practiced with utmost probity. His mantra to trainee surgeons: "minimize the number of moves" to complete a task I continue to teach with the same passion to anesthesia trainees. I shall miss you Barry. I thank you for your contributions to the health of children and for your tireless teaching of all of us in the operating room. It was a great honor to work with such a skilled surgeon as you. May you rest in piece. Jerry

When our newborn son was born 52 years ago he was rushed to Sick Kids from Women,s College hospital in an incubator in a car driven by my husband, and Dr. Shandling was waiting for him. My son had a diaphramatic hernia and Dr. Shandling was one of the very few surgeons in the world capable of performing this very fragile and dangerous procedure. I understand this operation was filmed and became a teaching tool for others to follow. Thank you Dr. Barry Shandling, we've never forgotten that day or your name. And thank you for saving our son.
My thoughts are with your family today and may they find peace in their lives.

Dr. Shandling performed my thymectomy (for myasthenia gravis) in August of 1983, when I was just 14. I'm forever grateful for his skillful and subtle surgery. My scar is virtually invisible, which is pretty amazing for open-chest surgery, and wonderful for a self-conscious teenager.
Also, 33 years later, I'm still symptom-free.
Thanks, Dr. Shandling.
And condolences to the family.

Dr. Shandling was one of the greatest teachers I have ever had. It is true that we spent many hours together in the hospital caring for children but many hours were also spent discussing fishing, family and integrity. I became a surgeon largely because of Dr, Shandling. More importantly I became a better person because of his friendship and guidance.

I am sorry to hear of Dr. Barry Shandling's passing. When "Dr. Barry and Mrs. Mary" first sold their home and moved into the townhouse I was honoured and delighted to make their acquaintance. They were a wonderful couple and we shared quite a few stories whenever I had occasion to spend time with them.
My condolences to Mrs. Mary Shandling and family.
