Obituary of Derek Currie

DEREK CURRIE

Derek, beloved son, brother, uncle and friend, passed away on Saturday, September 10, 2016 after a lengthy illness. He was surrounded by family and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.

Derek was a gentle, creative soul—a gifted musician and composer of songs and poetry:

I worship

The wind that rattles the Aspen leaves

The force that curls the waves

The smoothness of a pebble

The creak of a cricket’s legs

The glimmer of a reflected moon

On the surface of a nearly still lake

The firefly’s light

The great bear’s might

The hovering bird

And a gentle word

Born February 16, 1958 to Carol and Bernard Currie (d), Derek was one of six children, which grew to ten when Carol married our second father, Tom Wiggins (d). Derek's siblings mourn his loss and wish him peace: Christine (Paul), Catherine (Phil), John (Sandy), James, Sheilah (Mike), Diane (Bob), Deborah, Ian (d) (Ailsa) and Wendy (d).

Derek was a much loved uncle to his many nieces and nephews, who were so important to him. He called himself "gruncle" to their kids. Derek had numerous friends from his work at A-Way Express Courier, his years of playing and singing his original songs at open stages like Fat Albert’s, as well as friends of the four-legged variety in his work as a dog-walker.

We were all touched by Derek’s sense of humour, kindness, generosity, and were awed by his creativity and sharp wit—he frequently brought the room to tears of laughter with his unique observations.

The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES – NEWBIGGING CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) for a service to be held on Friday, September 16th at 3:00 p.m. Donations may be made to Fat Albert's, a place that was dear to Derek's heart, via www.gofundme.com/derekcurrie. Condolences, photographs and memories may be forwarded through www.humphreymilesnewbigging.com.
