Dear Dottie- I was saddened to learn of Hugh's recent passing and want to extend my condolences to you and your family on your loss.
My memories of Hugh are warm and vivid stretching back to the days we lived on Hillcrest Ave in Hamilton and Hugh was a top agent in my Dad's agency.
I remember as though it was yesterday seeing you and Hugh in front of our home having just returned from a ski trip or sailing adventure looking as though the two of you had just stepped from the pages of
Esquire and Vogue ...magical!
I always enjoyed Hugh's sense of humour, his warm personal style and the fact hat he was a very classy individual who cared deeply about others and was in a profession that allowed him to translate that care into financial security for those he served.
Both Karen and I wish you strength in the days ahead and God's blessings upon you and your family.
With sympathy & in memory , Bruce

Canada is a much better place because of him.
Heaven's black diamond runs; sailing squadrons and charm bank have welcomed an extraordinary new man.

To the Drake family - my deepest sympathy. Over a decade ago, Hugh and Dorothy generously welcomed me to their beautiful and peaceful summer home at Stoney Lake. These days at "Stoney" were a welcome respite from the sweltering stress of Toronto. I admired Hugh's energy, his exceptional abilities and accomplishemts, and his devotion to his family.

Hugh Drake was an unusual leader as a family man, London Life Branch manager but more than that...in a crisis such as helming his beloved 30ft keel boat "Herself" in a storm at night heading for the Port Dalhousie mark in the Susan Hood race. With sails in "hard on", heavy rains while beating to port, the average skipper would be shouting commands...not Hugh. He handed out colouring books and crayons admonishing us to be careful. There would be prizes afterwards....we miss him

Dearest Dotty and family,
My heart is with you.
Wonderful memories of times with you and Hugh at Craigleith, in Toronto, at RCYC, and at Stoney. Careening down hills-mostly out of control- on cross-country skis; laughing until the tears ran down at Hughie bursting into song with such gems as 'When Mother Papered the Parlour' and 'Your Feet's Too Big'. Sipping martinis with D. and H. after hanging out with dinosaurs at the ROM, being invited into Hugh's sanctuary- his shed at Craigleith or his workshop at Stoney - to view yet another remarkable boat restoration. Lively book and issues discussions which always revealed another dimension to the subject. Hugh's great pride in and love of you, Dotty- and your lovely daughters, grandkids and greatgrand kids.
I will be in touch shortly to arrange a visit in person.
With laughter and tears and loving thoughts,
Pauline

I was very saddened to read the obituary for Hugh Drake. While in recent years we have lost some contact, I have always felt that I never had a more supportive and connected friend in the sailing world. I remember so well when I was an organizer with Canada's involvement with the Americas' Cup and was harassed by newspaper reporters and so on. I was sitting on the step of our small trailer, which served as our headquarters, holding my head in my hands and thinking - what do I do with these guys?
Hugh Drake came up to me, put his hand on my shoulder and said "whatever it is, I'll take care of it." And sure enough he did handle it and everything else from then on. It was amazing what Hugh could do to take care of every issue whether the press, reporters, arrangements, planning and organizing.
God bless you Hugh.

My condolences to family and friends. Hugh was a great person; a one of a kind and a mentor to many, myself included. The obituary is a wonderful tribute to his life. From my perspective he was a true adventurer with stories to tell, boats to build and sail, races to win, mountains to ski. Proud father of 4 adoring girls,,,,husband of the talented and equally vibrant Dorothy. I have fond memories of spending lots of time at the family ski chalet. Wood smoke,,,logs on the fire....Turkey dinners.....laughter, sailboat construction in the backyard. Optimism all around. My Mother Berta, Dorothy;s cousin will be writing a letter to express her thoughts. We both are deeply moved by Hughs life and times.

I have so many memories of Hugh. In my early days I was always amazed at his constant ability to win in the 1/2 tonner Herself, and later as I got to know him, the wonderful fun we had with him as a FD coach in 1983 and 84, particularly when we were in Estonia. I will remember he and Dotty's generosity and love of life. He was always full of stories and laughter. An amazing man who led a full and wonderful life and will be very missed.

My uncle was a force of nature - always on - always ready for anything! My brother and I were remembering him today as that grinning uncle who would arrive at the Outlet Beach cottage in the forest green Austin Healey towing the wood dinghy 'Pal' with the old lab Buck in the passenger seat and turn the weekend into a high energy party.
Tinkling piano at Stoney, hat dances, rum and coke happy hour, raucous discussions and boats boats boats will be missed....but always remembered.
