Entering his office, the greeting was always, “How is the Chairman of the Board?” A gentle push from my grandfather, tasked with the weekly delivery for allergy shots, and my sleeves gently rolled up. White hair, home visits, huge desk and looking waaaaay up. Kimbark Blvd. meant, delivering Christmas cake (my Mom’s), fixing taps and toilets (my Dad: the plumber), and hanging lights on those spruce trees (my grandfather:tree surgeon). Lots of fond memories of a gentle and caring doctor.

My family was very fortunate to have Dr. Gracie as our physician for many years. What a wonderful doctor he was ... kind, considerate, so competent, the best listener and advocate. I extend my sincere and heartfelt sympathy to all in his family.

Such sad, sad news. Jim and Lil Gracie were long time friends of my parents, Bob & Ruby Houston. Dr. Gracie was also our family GP when we were growing up. Aside from my father, he was the first man I fell in love with at the tender age of 6! He was kind and gentle, with that beautiful twinkle in his eye. I can only imagine what a wonderful Grandfather and Great Grandfather he was. As often happens, we regretfully lost touch after my parents passed. Sending my condolences, I am truly sorry for your loss.

My parents and I were patients of Dr. Gracie from the time he opened his practice on Avenue Road until his retirement. He was always "our Dr. Gracie", a family friend as well as our great family doctor who saw us through many tough medical issues. I know how much his family will miss him and want to offer my sincere condolences.

I wish to extend my sincere sympathy to the family. I was employed as office nurse/secretary from 1956-1960. He was an excellent "GP" whose patients loved him. I felt it was a privilege to work with him . A voice from the past Margaret A. Burrell

I had the privilege of working for Dr. Gracie as his office nurse, and at Union Carbide during the 60's. He was such a fine man, and excellent doctor. I got to know his family of which he was so proud. I send my sincere condolences to his family at this time.

Dr. Gracie became my family's GP in the early 50's and we remained with him until he closed his medical practice in the 70's. By that time I was living in the United States but still have an enduring memory of one of his typical acts of caring and dedication. In 1974 on a trip to Toronto, my infant son, who had had a difficult premature birth, was exposed to scarlet fever. Dr. Gracie went to the trouble of tracking down and telephoning the baby's paediatrician, to ensure that he concurred with the advice Dr. Gracie was providing. This kindness has never been forgotten. Dr. Gracie was a wonderful and special man, and a compassionate physician. My sincere condolences to his family. Sandra Johnston.

Jim was an outstanding family physician/teacher and just a great guy. Starting in 1965, we worked together in a small group at the Toronto Western Hospital to begin the teaching of family medicine to medical students. Along with colleagues from the other teaching hospitals we established in 1969 the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto, which is today the largest department of family medicine in the world. Jim, this is part of your legacy! Jim's wife Lil and I already knew each other - Lil had been one of my demonstrators when I was an undergrad in the UofT medical school in the 1950s. Jim and I shared a love of golf and enjoyed our games at York Downs and Mississaugua. My wife Alison and I extend our condolences to the family. - Reg Perkin
