DORIS ELIZABETH GIBNEY
Died with dignity at the age of 94 on Tuesday, April 19, 2016. Born in Bradford, daughter of John and Sadie Gibney. Predeceased by sisters Muriel Fairty (Howard) and Joyce Conger(Stuart). Loving and cherished Aunt of Wendy Ann Fairty, Sheila Ross Fulton (Ken), Mark Fairty (Linda), Cam Fairty (Diana), Jane Low (Ben) and Stephen Conger. Great Aunt to 12. An honour student, Doris graduated from Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Orillia and the School of Nursing, University of Toronto. She worked both at Soldiers Memorial and Toronto Psychiatric Hospital as head nurse, instructor and assistant director of nursing before taking the job as Assistant Executive Director of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario for 20 years, retiring in 1981. Professional and community involvement included member of the advisory committee Ontario Mental Health, president and secretary of School of Nursing, U of T., long-time member and first woman warden, Church of Messiah, Toronto, member of the board of directors, Ontario Division, Canadian Cancer Society, just to name a few. Doris was passionate about life, eager to learn. She devoured books and travelled the world. She was an amateur painter, loved needlework, enjoyed classical music and theatre. Doris will be remembered for her caring ways, her generosity and her warm gentle smile. She will be dearly missed by all those who knew her.
The family would like to thank Dr. Diana Heath, Dr. Albert Wong, the staff, especially Ophelia and her support workers at Davenhill Senior Living and the nursing team at Wellesley Central Place, 4th floor E. for their support and remarkable care.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 7th in the CHURCH OF THE MESSIAH, 240 Avenue Road, Toronto. Internment will take place at a later date at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Bradford.
