With sympathies to the Jackson family on your loss. I remember Syd as a forward thinking and principled leader, not only for ManuLife but for the entire life insurance industry. I had the privilege of knowing him for the eight years I worked with the life insurance industry trade association, in the 1970's and early 80's. It was a time when women were emerging as leaders and equals in the industry and he could be counted upon to provide sage advice and guidance and paved the way for considerable innovation. When I left the industry he took the time to drop me a very kind note which I deeply appreciated and recall to this day. My deep condolences. Jill Stocker, Director of Education, CLHIA (1974 to 1982)

Dearest Trish, Barb and Cathy, such sad news of the passing of your dad, always Mr. Jackson to us! Another grand western boy. We all grew up knowing the western connection and what close friends our parents were and the importance of family and friends. I think of many wonderful memories and only have to say a few words and we all smile, oh the parties... Regina Roughriders and Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Sip And Sing, Bruce beach, skiing Sundridge and at Kirby, and many more...our heart aches for you all, he will be missed dearly. Sure hope he runs into my mom and dad. The party will continue.

To the family of Mr Jackson My father, Hillis Rowland was a 37 year life insurance agent with Manufactures Life.My parents attended many conferance's and always spoke well of Mr Jackson. My Dad introduced me to Syd Jackson when I joined our firm in 1977. 2 years later while attending "new man " school at 200 Bloor Street, Toronto, we met in the hallway. He stopped and said Hello Jim ! Wow, did that ever leave an impression, the president of the company remembered my name! Jim Rowland

Dear Trisha, Barb and Cathy, I am so sorry to read of your loss. I met your dad several times over the years at the Stovel's or my parents' homes. Even in my youth, I recognized a man of integrity and humour who put everyone at ease. Your dad had very reason to be pretentious given his lifetime of accomplishments, but he wasn't. He was kind and interested in all people. Your dad was truly an elegant gentleman. My sympathies.

To the family of Sydney Jackson: To you and your family I send my sincere condolences on the recent passing of Syd. I have very fond memories of both Syd and Nancy as I've been a long-time insurance agent with Manulife. When Syd was their President and CEO I attended a number of international conferences hosted by Manulife and it was on these occasions I spent valuable time with both and appreciated their humor and forthrightness. On one occasion, Syd mentioned that he was coming to Vancouver with Nancy and on their behalf I arranged a helicopter trip from Vancouver to Whistler. Upon landing on a mountaintop in Whistler, the pilot assisted Nancy out of the helicopter to view the panoramic and spectacular scenery from the mountain peak. Syd called me after the flight and told me how much he and Nancy enjoyed the whole experience and especially being able to leave the helicopter and enjoy the incredible views standing on the glacier. At the subsequent conference I attended, Syd took me aside and told me it was a trip of a lifetime for them both showing me several photographs and you could tell from their faces in the photo's it was an incredible experience. In closing I can only tell you that Syd was an outstanding President, CEO and person. He had a full and productive life and many of us who came to know Syd quite well will miss him greatly. Sincere regards,
D

Syd was a great husband and a passionate and caring family man. He left an amazing legacy, and lived a very full and long life, and his smile, sense of humour, wise advice and perfect moral compass will be sadly missed. Through his career, he made a huge and lasting impact on Manulife. He championed diversity of all types, but particularly advancing the role of women in senior roles, technological innovation, international expansion and taking a bold vision for the company’s future. His contributions directly led to Manulife being in the great shape in which it is today. Syd is remembered most significantly for his personal integrity – and for driving Manulife to do "the right thing" in all instances. Speaking personally, Syd was a huge support to me throughout my career, frequently visiting or telephoning to offer his support and encouragement, particularly during challenging times. For that and many other reasons, I will miss him dearly. Syd was pre-deceased by his beloved wife, Nancy, who was also a critical part of the success of Manulife in her own right. Nancy took a personal interest in – and projected warmth and kindness toward – all that she encountered. She attended a staggering number of company events despite the fact that she personally battled with debilitating rheumatoid arthritis. Even when in pain, her smile was radiant, and she provided inspiration to all of us, but most of all, Syd. It will be very hard conducting our Annual Meeting this year without Syd's smiling, wise and supportive face in the audience. But far more significant is the loss of a wonderful father and grandfather. Please accept my sincere condolences during this difficult time. Donald A. Guloien President and Chief Executive Officer Manulife Financial Corporation

Working with Syd was the best part of working at Manulife, a terrific organization. I told him so when I left the company in the late 80s. He once told me that being CEO wasn't as easy as some might think...like being a tugboat, nudging an ocean liner out to sea. But having chosen to create a progressive, entrepreneurial culture, Syd was clearly comfortable with the challenge. Syd was an outstanding business leader and a fine human being who will be remembered with respect and fondness by many. I feel fortunate to have known him.

To my dear friend Barb and family, I was sad to hear from you today that your Dad had passed on this past Sunday. There's nothing quite like your Dad when you are the daughter is there? Your Dad was someone I wish we had known better. So kind, witty, intelligent and he had such love for all of your family. Loved the house ... He will surely be missed each day but he's, as you said, with some really good people now! Take care and know you are well loved as was he. Love Judi and David Robertson
