Obituary of Voldemar Gustavson
GUSTAVSON, Voldemar
Voldemar (Volli, Wally) passed away at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at the age of 87, after a valiant struggle with cancer. Volli was born in Saaremaa, Estonia where he attended a Maritime School. This was cut short when he, along with his family, fled to Sweden in 1944 to escape the Communist invasion. He was in the Swedish Merchant Marine until he came to Canada in 1950. He was a designer at ThyssenKrupp (Dover Turnbull) where he worked for over 25 years until retirement. His passions were music and sailing. He was an accomplished musician playing the accordion, clarinet & saxophone. He was a band leader for the "Estonia" orchestra as well as a member of the "Saarlaste Ühing". He had a strong commitment to his family and will be forever loved and missed by his daughter Stella, life partner Evi Kilu, sisters Mary Valge and Nelly Hubel and brother Peter Gustavson (Jeannie), nieces and nephews, extended family and friends. The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude for the exceptional care provided at both Sunnybrook and Toronto General Hospital, and especially by the palliative care team lead by Dr. Debbie Selby in Sunnybrook K Wing. The family will receive friends at the HUMPHREY FUNERAL HOME A.W. MILES - NEWBIGGING CHAPEL, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Davisville Avenue) from 12:00 noon, Friday, March 4, 2016 followed by the funeral service at 1:00 pm. A private family interment will follow.
